Combat Parry QTEs are ruining the combat for me.
This game was advertised as a turn based JRPG, yet the QTE difficulty is similar to a dark souls or fighting game parry window.

And while there are other turn based rpgs that have quick time mechanics such as Super Mario RPG, or Legend of Dragoon, these both had options for mitigating skill at them and still being able to play. For example, in super mario rpg, offense and level were more important and it was easier to time consistent weapon attacks and you could change to a favorite animation if you liked. Similarly for Legend of Dragoon, you could change your attack to something easier to time if you wanted.

In Expedition 33, the defensive parries are 100 percent damage reduction and a counter attack. Its more offense, way more defense and is so strong it becomes mandatory. The tells for these windows are very small and require memorization.

And while you could turn the difficulty down so that the attacks hit for paltry amounts, this does not make the game engaging.

The game is not enjoyable from a casual perspective of being able to miss parries simply because the performance difference for hitting parries is so high, that it is usually right to go for them and you can fight enemies that one shot you for non parried attacks.

To me, the game is not enjoyable to play because the parries are inconsistent to hit for me. The game needs to either have parries be something more achievable with a bit less in the risk reward department on them or it needs a difficulty mode where there is challenge outside of hitting the parries.

Also I feel like the parry timings are very off from the animations. This is probably not something fixable but because this is such a huge element of the game it needs to be addressed.

Yeah the timing windows are a bit tight and the animations/tells are lacking, but what I found helped me now is by holding the parry button in for longer, can manage to stay alive still even if it's not a perfect parry, almost like a block

Timings are very tight by design. Since if you pull them off you will take no damage and not only that you will deal massive damage back on the enemy. So if they made it easier then you would parry alot more attacks and that would make the game ALOT more easy in general. And some players acually want and like the challenge. It's a skill thing, i had a super hard time in the beginning but the more i play the better i get at the system. It's just that you need to parry alot later than you first would assume.

These things MAKE the combat for me. It is so rewarding (just like in a souls game) when I either get the parry timing off the bat, or when I learn new ones on enemies that gave me trouble.

I love this combat system!

Same it's one of the best combat systems i have played in a long time. It really engages you and keeps you on edge all the time. I found that i acually fight every single enemy. When in other games i just run past alot of them because they are a chore to fight.

Right on. I love JRPGs, but a lot of them just because smashing one button over and over as you become overpowered. You can't do that here.

You can make your combat a lot easier with decent builds too. I was dying a bit and redid my party. Made a huge diff.

Parrying tough enemies and bosses for huge counter damage is awseoms.

I also love the Expedition (group) parry/counters too not just individual characters.

Very cool!

I love souls games. This parry and Dodge system for turn based is too tight and unforgiving...and coming from elden ring and the first berzker, the frames are too tight. And for time consuming turn based battles...ild rather just play a souls like, where I can freely move and attack/Dodge/parry/repeat.

Skill in a turn based? Not for me.

Just put a LOT of points in defense so you can afford to miss a parry. Also what helps me with parrying is turning off special effects because the sound cues are deceptive sometime(imo). I perfected a final boss on expert when I turned it off because I relied only on my vision and not being distracted by the sounds.

They just want to button mash their way through and and have no challenge...

tbf I've beaten Sekiro and struggle here, the audio cues don't feel like they match up and the animations don't work necessarily on contact or so. I'd still love the challenge but it does feel slightly janky. Perhaps if there is a proper guide on what to look/listen for when parrying, because I feel like I am missing something.

Have gotten better at it, but still a little rough. Just the one hit KO from some bosses sucks a little when you miss it.

you can also have challenge without ♥♥♥♥♥♥ QTEs, but for that devs would need to know what they do which they dont seem to do.

I heard there are items that will disable parrying for some other effect, I hope that's true, because I'm not interested in a qte fest.

Same, Qte games are lowest form of games you can get. If I wanted a console game I'd buy a console.

Kids however love this rubbish. Pushing a button when prompted is skill..

No, "they" came here because it is a turn-based RPG, as there are not so much of them anymore... and a pure turn-based RPG means having time to think, in a battle and outside. The challenge in turn-based RPG did not come from enemies that require lightning-fast skills - but from preparing and using the right tools at the right time.

I did try this on Game Pass, and I am not so far into the game, just did my first steps on the island... but when I read about enemies, that _will_ kill you 100%, if you don't dodge/parry (and that within an unforgiving time-frame, even on easy) - then this is not a true Turn-Based-RPG, at least for me so I will leave it alone. Being 60+ is probably not the best age to do games which require good reflexes. To all others: have fun!

(PS: Just an additional hint: I came for the game, because I read about it, outside Steam, being Turn-Based. I did not read (or see) the part where they mention the reaction part. So I somewhat tapped in half-blindly, that's on me... Still a shame that it has this hurdle.)

This 100 percent. I love my turn based tactical games. Best of luck to us both finding something that will scratch that itch.
