This isn't a JRPG.
So I was really hyped when I first saw a trailer for this game, and I was looking forward to it. The art style, the animation and overall aesthetics were like a breath of fresh air. I western JRPG that looked THIS promising??

However I struggle to consider this a JRPG. Don't get me wrong it IS fantastic, and the scenery and characters are breathtakingly good, but this is not a JRPG....it's a souls-like.

You have 'expedition points' periodically around the map. You use these to refill your potions, allocate your stats and 'level up' abilities. When you use an expedition point, it saves your game, but also resets any enemies in the environment. Sound familiar?

Plus, while I was aware there was a 'dodge / parry' mechanic in this game, as well as other quick-time events, I feel like they under-sold just HOW DEEPLY they are tied into the game. Like, you legitimately cannot play this without perfecting the parry and dodge mechanics. And while some people may enjoy that I, unfortunately, do not have full use of my hands and lack the required dexterity. This is precisely why I can't play souls-like games and stick to more traditional RPG aspects.

Overall, while the game is certainly worthy of the scores and praises it's getting, and I absolutely can see it becoming a GOTY contender, I can't help but feel like the Souls mechanics and action combat where purposefully hidden within the 'turn based' tag-line.

I am so glad this was on Game Pass, and that I don't pre-order anymore. I would have been bummed as hell if I had paid full price for this on the promise of a old-school RPG.

The developers never said it was a JRPG. In the store description it literally says RPG

Right, so we have apparently BOTH come to the conclusion that...this is not a JRPG.
Thanks for playing?

It's closer to being a JRPG than literally games like modern Final Fantasy currently are.
Just because it has checkpoints that respawn enemies and combat is 90% turn based instead of 100% doesn't mean it's suddenly a souls like either.

Well the J in JRPG is for? I mean... this is a French game so... rpgs did everything that is "nowadays" associated with jrpg way before that term became a thing.

So having problems considering this a "western JRPG" isn't really a problem for you considering that is an oxymoron.

Then go back to Persona???

Yeah, I also got hit with the JRPG tag and I immediately thought "mmm, this looks like a souls like" but since the other tags said turn-based and party-based I figured it was worth a second look.

FRPG ftw!

Some 'journos' defined it a JRPG, that doesn't mean it is one or the developers presented it as such. It's just 'professionals' not knowing turn-based combat isn't just a JRPG thing. And the tags on the store page are 'user tags', not official

Please don't tell me these "professionals" also see BG3 as a JRPG since that is turn based too lol.
