It is linear, you can explore the zones you come to and find hidden optional bosses and items but it is not open world.

This vastly overstates the open-ness. The game is much more linear than this.
It's linear and all the better for it

Yeah it's more like Darksouls than GTA if you want to see that way.

Level design is a big thing for me, I like to find shortcuts and areas where you can loop around find an optional boss or some cool loot, maybe get lost.

Games can be linear and still have great level design and depth.

How is it for that sort of thing? I'm going to check it out later when I'm home anyway, might as well see what's up on Game Pass.

It's like most JRPGs where there's a fairly linear progression (with a world map). And I can only assume that eventually it opens up extensively with lots of optional bosses and areas.

The layouts themselves are very typically JRPG. Mostly straight areas with some branching paths with loot at the end of them that you double back after picking up. With some circular paths.

It does some more interesting stuff with them, though, with more vertical areas, crossing gaps, that sort of thing.
