You get a ton but cant use them till a bit into the game. It is about after the 2nd area you complete

Use can use them after you visit the camp after the boss right after you meet the 3rd party member.
I am at camp now and stil have no idea how to use them.
There's an NPC called the Curator in camp that will allow you to spend them - for me he was hiding in a cave and hard to spot.
Just keep playing. You literally can't miss it.
It's pretty poor design to have people collecting all these things but not have the mechanic enabled for a long time

Why do you think this?
The first time you enter camp nothing tells you that you don't have access to do it yet the tooltip on the item say to use them in camp. Having players dig around for something that isn't there benefits no one. Just don't have them drop until the mechanic is unlocked. No button to consume colour of lumina until a certain point so that's also confusing.

I think that they should probably have a little tooltip that explains the first time you pick one up that you can't use them until later. But I think that it's a positive thing that you can pick them up still because it lets you save them up early and then use them en masse once you have a better idea of how the Lumina system itself works. I also think that since they are two of the "common" types of loot you can pick up from the ground, it is good that they're around since otherwise you'd just be picking up only chroma in the early game.

I agree with you.

Yep, at camp for first time and no way to use this. Just have Lune in the party.
You must get Maelle back, an NPC then joins your camp that will allow you to use all the upgrade materials you have found. This should happen after a few shorts hours in Act I though, do not explore at ALL until you have Maelle on your team and the NPC that will then join your camp. So prioritise getting Mael back. Then you are all set.

Personally I hate having to backtrack in games, so the less I have to do while I backtrack the better. The devs definitely should have included a tool tip description saying something along the lines of, "you don't know what this is for. Perhaps you'll find some use for it later" then have a character explain how to use it when you can finally use it. It's a little nitpicky, but it nags me when I find something I can't figure out how to use in a video game and the game doesn't explain or give me the tools to use it.
I was mega confused as well. Like others said you gotta keep playing till you reach a part (couple hours into the game) where the Curator shows up and on every Camp you'll have him available to upgrade stuff and use the Chromas and Colours.
