Odd, noisy shadows on characters?
Hello there,

see Screenshots:

Looks even worse in motions. Like the shadows are noisy or missing anti-aliasing or something.
As far as I can see, it only concerns the shadows falling on a character though, including the shadows from their own hair.

The rest of the graphics look fine, if a bit odd/blurry from the general art style I assume?

So far I done:
* Tried out various graphics settings, preset low to epic
* Anti-Aliasing/Shadows low to epic
* Tried each upscaler, scaling low to 100%/DLAA
* Disabled the post processing options
* Updated the games DLSS DLL through DLSS Updater
* Update Nvidia drivers to latest 576.02 (didn't want to but had to see if that fixed it, it didn't...)
* Nvidia App does not offer any options for the game yet
* Nvidia Control Panel sets a max 120 FPS globally, but no other enforced settings as far as I'm aware

System specs:
CPU: Ryzen 9800X3D
GPU: RTX 5080
Resolution: 4k
Max FPS: 60

Nothing really helped so far.
Ideas what else it could be?

Anyway, I've given up for now.

Cheers!

Same for me. Tried diffrent settings, nothing worked. Still this noisy, blurry shadows. I have a amd card, used the sharpening, the FSR, tried diffrent resolutions, nothing worked. Dont really know what to do to get clean shadows.

Same here. Something does not look right. Even at 4k DLAA.

Found a semi solution for (modern?) Nvidia GPUs from another thread:

Use DLSS with Preset K. Use the Override feature in the Nvidia App for it.

If the Nvidia App shows no options for the game yet:
Go into the Nvidia Control Panel and under "Manage 3D settings", select the games executable and hit "Add". Then save the Control Panel and reload Nvidia App.

No clue why any of that needs to be done that way but it works.

Even with this though, the shadows are not great. They are far far less noisier then before though, especially in character motion.

The same thing happens for me on AMD 7900xtx

The noise is caused by the low sample count of the soft shadows.

Go to appdata/local/Sandfall/saved/config/windows and create a file called Engine.ini

[/script/engine.renderersettings]

r.Shadow.Virtual.SMRT.RayCountLocal=0
r.Shadow.Virtual.SMRT.RayCountDirectional=0
r.Shadow.Virtual.SMRT.SamplesPerRayDirectional=0
r.Shadow.Virtual.SMRT.SamplesPerRayLocal=0

Add this into it.
Save and set the file to Read only or the game will delete it.
This completely disables soft shadows and gives sharp shadows instead. I wasn't able to get rid of the noise with soft shadows enabled.

damn this did the trick! Thank you so much. I can live with this. I can't with that noisy mess of soft shadows. That needs to be reworked. Now I can enjoy this beauty of a game.
