How on earth do you time parries?
Practically impossible.. I think I have gotten 1 out of 20 vs the girl in sparring (harbour).
No idea as to the correct timing.. will probably wait for cheats before I sink more time in this.

Honestly, it seems like a l9t of people will have to learn timings pretty quickly. Most reviewers were saying the opening hours were easier but it definitely scales up in difficulty that even on easy, some optional end game bosses and story bosses will one shot you if you don't have parrying and dodging down.

I'll just wait for the inevitable dev balance patch in a few weeks that adds another difficulty to maybe show some sort of timing, like a flash or a zooming in circle

Died a lot and get good... I mean, seriously.. I'm playing on expert difficulty, that girl kicked my ass a lot. How did you win? How did you manage to dodge and parry? I also ask myself the same question. So, yeah... Lots and lots of practice.

Wow, sounds quite dull and repetitive

Not sure of your specs, but I restricted my frame rate and just kept restarting until I got a feel for it. Otherwise, if I'm not sure when the enemy's attack will connect, I'll default for dodge instead.

I stared at enemy weapons and got lucky for most of my parry/dodge attempts.

Luckily you can get plenty of practice in by repeatedly resting and fighting the spawns.

God, I hope not. I mean, balance the game by all means but the draw to the game is the parrying and the dodging in the active combat. There's already and option to auto parry, from what someone said, in the options. Maybe do that.

The perfect timing window needs to be increased. I am visually seeing my character perfect parry an incoming attack but I still take damage.

When Eveque casts a spell, just go to the beat of We Will Rock You.

Having to parry and dodge in turn based combat is dumb as hell.
Lords.
We will have to disagree there. The combat being what it is is the main draw to this game. Being involved in combat beyond just selecting commands is a good way to breathe fresh air and set apart from other games in the genre. The only atelier game that does something similar that I miss was Lost Odyssey from Mist Walker studios. I wish that game would be released on steam so bad.

What helped me was not locking at the enemy but instead focus on sound and looking at my characters. Most attacks seem to have a little sound cue beforehand, also, if your framerate is good you can reaction parry the moment your character would get hit. Timing seems to be the same as Dark Souls 1's parry timing, if that is of any help.

edit: spelling sucks

Luck, learning, and cursing. I find dodging is top priority till you figure out the timing.
