FloatingDamage Numbers.
The game looks amazing. BUT. During the tutorial at the beginning, I noticed the floating damage numbers. I saw nothing in the settings to turn them off. I HATE FLOATING DAMAGE NUMBERS. Fix it. Otherwise, this game is a hard pass.

How are you supposed to know how much damage you're doing without damage indicators?

It's an RPG, not a looter shooter. In almost every other game, single player or multi, there is an option to toggle it. So you're happy, I'm happy. Right now I'm putting the game on hold and see if they fix it. If not, I'll get my money back and you can play with your floaty numbers.

I don't think I've ever played a Final Fantasy or a Dragon Quest or a Persona or anything in between that let me turn damage numbers *off* :lunar2020thinkingtiger:

That seems like in incredibly challenging way to play a JRPG, and now I'm super curious which games you were talking about that does this.

It's a turn-based RPG, almost every game in the genre has visible damage numbers, I guess you must be new to the genre (which is okay, everyone starts somewhere), but it's absolutely the norm for this type of game.

They aren't just for show, they give you instant visual feedback on how effective you are being with your attack choices on that enemy.

its funny how people like you telling a guy he must be new because you are the person who thinks its not possible to play without a ui full of numbers.
There is no reason building a nice animation if you cannot see it because over all your screen is a colored big 999999.

i even play games like poe without numbers because it looks just bad.

and by the way this game has a healthbar where the damage is shown in numbers so no a flashy big number in my face is not needed

Generally the only RPGs which either don't have visible damage numbers, or allow you to turn them off, are all action RPGs, or real-time with pause (both distinct sub-genres), not turn-based.

Like it or not, this is the norm for the genre, and has been for decades, if you genuinely don't know that, then yes, it means you are most likely new (nothing wrong with being new, but let's not pretend what you are asking for here is normally an option in this kind of game, as that's extremely rare).

It's true that CRPG's have combat data in the activity log.
I suppose you could play Pillars without the floaty numbers and not miss much, JRPG's generally don't have an overall 'log' or way to scroll up and see the combat history though, sadly enough.

I agree that would be pretty neat - but as it stands JRPG's tend to follow a different visual style and presentation and knowing right then and there if your attack is hitting a weakness/being absorbed etc. is easier then scanning some combat log in any case.
I'm with you OP I always disable them in every game that lets me do it. It's criminal to "obscure" the beautiful graphics and animations with huge font size damage numbers. I hope a modder can do this for us.

Technically they could be turned off while still letting you know how much damage you've done, since the enemy health bars themselves list the damage amount.
I often seen that feature in ARPG like Diablo or POE because numbers sometime can block the character model when they try to clear a dungeon as fast as possible. Normal JRPG players like to see they farvorite character deal big number, it's the thing.

Not really, they can put health bars. Giving at least the option to reduce the font size would go a long way. Also putting the game on hold because of this
There's this mod here. It says it removes all text so uhh, probably removes words like "Perfect" "Jump" and whatnot too.

But like, is there actually a JRPG that has ever done this?

It just seems... weird. Like removing a speedometer from driving games or a resource counter from a 4X game; it's a fundamental and expected/important UI feature of the genre. :d3_distract:

Completely agree with you and OP: The ability to get those damn numbers out of your screen impairs immersion. Rogue Trader has it and many other RPGs and until Expedition 33 fixes this glaring omission, lots of gamers are going to give it a hard pass…
youre throwing away this game of the year bc of floating dmg numbers? you do you ig
