Felt like a step back from Daggerfall/Morrowind though.

I think you're dismissing how much pull and marketing advantage a 2.7 Trillion dollar company like Microsoft has over an Indie/AA studio..
AAA games with massive marketing budgets bomb all the time.
If E33 fails due to Oblivion then it was due to E33 being ♥♥♥♥; as simple as that.
Doubtful, this game just creeped up like a stale fart. Everyone knows about Oblivion.

Whilst I'd love to revisit it in all of it's splendour, I'd much rather find joy in something new, with Expedition 33.
I see the Remaster as more of a means for a new generation of players to enjoy. If they had reservations about some of the systems and fidelity of the original, this re-release could help.
