Doubtful, but there will most likely be romantic themes among the characters. More likely used as a background narrative to give the world a deeper feel.

There is apparently some sort of relationship level mechanic for the main characters, but idk if it amounts to anything romantic.

I mean in the trailers they showed Lune and Sciel holding hands but I don't know at all. Maybe they are good friends. Personally I don't care if there is, I just want a good story and not every story needs romance. I mean Gustave lost his love Sophie.

Can't think of many romances in RPGs done well, so I could care less. However, the focus is elsewhere, though a romance may form over the course of the journey and be a kind of endgame type of subplot but that's about it.

I believe you are asking for boxed romance like in more open-ended RPGs, which this does not have.

Fellow Legend of Dragoons player, I see. I liked that story and combat system. Hopefully, it inspired this.

I honestly don't mind if it is a choice or isn't. I just like a good romance sub plot like FF sometimes does and dragon quest 8.
Heck I even like it when there is a romance main plot like in Tales of Arise.
If it is a choice though. Lune all the way.

Doubt it and wouldn't want one with such a mission. Though as mentioned two grieving widows is a possibility.
I'm actually more interested how the game will end and if they'll set up multiple sequels to it using Maelle, given the age gap to her actual Paintress death.

What I'm about to say constitutes a minor spoiler, which may or may not help. I do not have the game yet, I have not played it; just providing information that could theoretically assist in answering the question.

In the leaked achievements list, you can see that there are achievements for boosting one's Relationship Level with the various party members, up to 6 or 7 IIRC. Gustave doesn't have one, very much implying that he is the "main character" through which his connection with the others is being measured. As to whether or not one's "Relationship Level" amounts to actual romance...no idea. That said, Maelle is 16 and his adoptive sister, so...probably more like regular ol' friendship.
