We are really on a roll.
Well, is true that Richard Garriot aka Lord British was born in England, before moving to America.
Ultima 7 was a fantastic game, a great piece of RPG history and a strong inspiration for many designers afterwards included Larian’s founder.
And the traditional fantasy genre is rooted in European culture as far as I know, Celtic legends and the absolutely amazing work Tolkien did building on them.
Trumpist MAGA has more culture than whatever hellhole the leftist demons in America crawled out of. They almost single-handedly ended art as an endeavour. Their sole purpose in life is to destroy both art and culture.
Statues are an art form. They were also the first thing the progressive left started destroying when they got popular. Not just any Trump statue either, but also historical heroes from several countries, including European ones. Should tell you a lot about how much they care about culture. They're an insult to humanity, to legacy, to beauty, and to everything E33 represents. They'd be the first ones trying to cancel this game if it wasn't popular enough to brush it off.
You are certainly sounding very "trump-ish" right now. Lumping a group of people together just because you don't like the stuff some of them are doing... I am an American, but I'm not in the least "MAGA." America has a lot of culture, especially if you look to music and artistic innovation. I listen to classical music from Europe, but you can't deny that early 20th century American blues is better than 95% of anything you see on Eurovision.
Also, if you are on message boards talking about STEAM, can you really say you aren't participating in a consumerist society?
All that said, I tend to prefer European games to American ones recently as well. But Ubisoft has been pretty heavy-handed on the "consumerist society" side as well. Plus, minus AC:Shadows, they haven't really put out anything of amazing quality recently (in my opinion).
I also find many Japanese games better than European ones too. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Elden Ring, Dragon Quest XI, etc.
Also, Metroid Prime , Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Portal 2, Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, Stardew Valley, Spider-Man, Hades 1 and 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Psychonauts, etc. were all American made and wonderful.
Clair Obscur is excellent, but no better than things like chrono trigger, xenogears (even the newer mainline "xeno" titles ? this game is inspired a fair bit by them), ff6, ff7, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2, persona, smt and such. :P
Best strategy RPG is probably tactics ogre, that game is intense af. :D
There's stuff like Unicorn Overlord that is more recent too. :P
Best action RPG is a bit debatable, one of the mana titles perhaps ? or Terranigma ?
Action RPG is a wide category, Diablo 2 fits in there too. :P
Ultimately, what we think is "best" is a subjective metric anyways.
...Clair Obscur is excellent though!
JRPG's mostly began out of wizardry, which was made in the US I believe.
Now it’s a different story.
Neither they compare that well with what we have today, the genre advanced.
I loved Xenogears … when I was younger. Today I would judge it differently.
Valkyrie Profile (really stretching the definition of RPG here), Chrono Trigger (and even Cross), Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy tactics, they were fantastic for the era, truly the golden age of made-in-Japan RPGs, within the genre nothing produced elsewhere was that good.
They may still be good, but they would need more than a fresh coat of paint to really be on par with the best of the newer games.
Just think how bare the dialogue was in FF6, compared to modern standards. There were some good scenes, but on the whole the player used to fill a LOT of blanks with their imagination.
I was a big fan of Sabin, but the character I loved in reality was largely a creation of my own mind.
As an American, 90% agreed. T
Though I'd point out that America still has plenty of people with heart and soul fighting the Trumpists every step of the way. We're just losing right now. Pray for us in our hour of need!
