Hugging someone else, while touching their clothes. Wearing a piece if clothing big enough to drape an entire street? Holding a sword? Touching a house? Have a house as part of your body, like built into the wall. These are the real important lore questions we need to understand.

OP is actually right. There is a journal you get near the finale about one expedition that managed to go through the monolith barrier while being naked.

Also notice how Gestrals and Grandis never get gommaged (because they are naked!), even though they are the oldest creations in the canvas, and should've been gone before the humans.

the gommage is simply painted things being wiped clean, the difference between an object and a human is functionally nothing, they're both the same, the goal however is to remove people, hence why them and things on their person get removed
