Have their composers work together. 300 song game!
Environments in Nier border on being jokes, like the first zone is the most bland-looking thing I've ever seen, genuinely looks like it's made for nintendo DS. E33 has absolutely magnificent environments. Maybe a little overuse of random items everywhere, and zones could have been more distinct from eachother, but the randomness fits the story and if you do a side by side on looks it's embarassing for Nier.
Much better dialogue and cinematography in E33.
Top-notch chara-design in both, top-notch music in both, top-notch story in both
Except you can clear E33's story in one playthrough, the only slightly annoying part being the Dessendre dialogues that mean nothing to you during act 1 / 2
While Nier is INSUFFERABLE during TWO ENTIRE PLAYTHROUGHS before you get to the good stuff. The kingdom hearts-ahh story in the first playthrough with them final-fantasy looking adam and eve almost made me quit due to how cheesy it was. The pay-off is phenomenal and some of the later stuff might make it worth it, but this game is too long for no good reason, while E33 delivers on a story that is AT LEAST just as good, while not overstaying its welcome nor going "it starts to get good once you finished the game 10 times I promise". It also has a much better post-game.
Nier is a classic for several reasons, but there's always a bigger fish, and E33 is an adult gargantuan leviathan of a game.
