There are two open questions that would have an impact :
- did painted Verso ever find joy?
- did Maelle ever go home?
I don't see any reason to believe the answer is yes to either of these
There is no definitive confirmation that answer is no either though
But there are hints, Verso looks grumpy & Maelle looks... Dead?
Ergo you can see it as a "bittersweet" ending at best
Screwed the Dessendres but saved an entire world, clearly the moral pick
Or is it? We'll see if they ever expand on the lore
If you REALLY want some gaslighting :
- painted Verso is now mortal, can off himself if he still wants
- faceless boy Verso was tired & bored but not suffering
- dad / mom / sis can still pop by & see her
- After defeating Renoir the game says We Continue, not Verso Continues
- You save Maelle's morbidly depressed step-brother from himself and give him a good life instead
- You also save Maelle's two best friends who have always been there for her every step of the way
- You also save Verso's two best friends who couldn't help him overcome his morbid depression
- You also preserve the masterpiece Maelle's brother poured so much love into
- You also pay respects to all the expeditioners who gave up their lives throughout the years to ensure Tomorrow Comes
- You also ensure everyone whose lives were stolen by Renoir get bestowed the gift of life once again
- You also ensure Lumiere truly prospers as a place of joy just like it was prior to the Fracture, at the expense of one mass-terrorist traitor who as punishment for countless accounts of treason and genocide gets to play a piano for a living
- You also ensure Maelle finds true happiness by letting her live her life and selflessly devote it to preserving Lumiere's reality, while her family can still pop in to say hello
- And last but not least, the ending comes with x2 exclusive membership outfits
Therefore Maelle's ending offers a better deal because one could never abandon a member of Aquafarm 3.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbYAwZBd7fg
- Renoir ending is the patriarchy ending where men know better
- Aline is perfectly happy to let Alicia live in the canvas after all
- Clea would rather she didn't but doesn't mind all that much
- All Clea really cared about / needed was getting Renoir out
- She got him AND Aline now, they can handle the Writers EZ
- Maelle ending has potential for an expansion / sequel
- Verso promised to help bring back Pierre, not kill Sciel
- You did not fall for the "Format C / delete System 32" bait
- Monoco can find more lovely feet
I mean yeah obviously it's a 100% good ending Kappa
