Monoco
I am so glad that they gave him maybe the best song in the entire game. I am a sucker for wind instruments.

As a side question, how does everyone like him compared to all the other Blue Mages out there? I think I prefer him over Quina but Quina is Quina and Quina has Mighty Guard. I prefer him over Quistis and Kimahri. Then there is the old painter man? Or is it a little girl from 6?

I'm obligated to say Quistis is the best because she uses a whip. I love Monoco though. I never put much thought into a build for him, but he always did great damage anyway. Good character to just have fun and do whatever with.

Outside of his character and voice actor I think he stands out because he transforms and uses the animations of the attacks he is doing. Which I am pretty sure can't be said for the other Blue Mages.

As far as builds go, yeah he can just be the slap this on and watch it work character. He can debuff, he can buff, he can be a healer, he can be a battery, he can use all the elements and then his All Mighty abilities can put out the bigger damage.

The transformations really are cool. Just a bit awkward with the camera sometimes, when he turns into something huge. Those were the hardest attack QTEs in the game for me 😂

I had more issues with the camera if a party member was down and part of their body was blocking my view. Stalact could be wonky though.
Love his sense of humor, always looked forward to any scenes with him.

I really like some of the Nevrons attacks plus it's nice to give Nevrons a taste of their own medicine especially if certain ones have been kicking you butt.
That said I love the "Heavy Mask" Moves the most.

Yeah his in combat lines always get a smirk out of me. He and Verso are damn good together with how they tease one another and the absolute quick deadpan deliveries from Monoco.

Heavy Mask skills really do have the Oomph that is satisfying. Glaise and Tete Whack feel good.

So not Lune?

Monoco's probably my favorite character. Funny in a way that still works with the bleak story, and comic relief without making him someone you can't take seriously at all. Also, I love blue mages.

For me, I think my main complaint is that he's done dirty by how late in the game you get him. By the time he joins the party, you can unlock over half of his skills before even entering the next dungeon. IMO if you're going to have a blue mage character, they're best introduced as early as possible so you can get into the skill scavenger hunt from the beginning. Makes encountering new enemies more exciting and eliminates the tedium of backtracking to pick up all of the skills. FF5 and Crystal Project did this best, to my memory.

He also has some AP problems and has the fewest visual customization options. He's very effective if built right, though.

I'm not a big fan of blue mages, as there's often a tedious capture mechanic, where you first have to weaken a monster then use a certain skill to capture it, and I end up just skipping all that and playing other characters/jobs. Thank god this process is fully automated here, you only need him to be in the active party, no extra steps.

I still didn't get much use out of him though, for one thing, his skill tree is just too big and I'm not gonna sit there and test and compare every skill, but also the RNG wheel makes him less reliable than other characters. End game though, Joyaro + Lampmaster seems like a very powerful combo, I had no problem smoking his solo fights.

I think what makes the wheel work for me is that it's not RNG at all, you can plan around using particular skills to get to the result you want. It's only random in your starting position if you have a staff that doesn't specify which mask you begin in.

Granted, that's work, when you can just Joyaro and one-shot things.

An earlier introduction would of been nice. While he has the fewest visual options he is the only one that looks good in the "pure" outfit. Yeah I do enjoy looking at his wheel and figuring out what I want to do. Not sure the damage multiplier but it seems like 200% but roulette is always on so it is hard to tell.

Yeah having to lower each enemy down to a quarter health and then eat them to see if they maybe had a skill has certainly come a long way. You can get 1 of his All Mighty skills in the Monolith which is nice. Lampmaster is strong from a cost/ramp/wheel adjustment perspective. The other 2 are quite expensive by comparison. Once he became unlocked Maelle got kicked to the curb.
