And potentially 9 but I never played it.
FF9 is my favorite in the series and I always enjoy myself when I start it over.
9 was fun but i wasn't a big fan of a bunch of the characters. not to the degree of 12 mind you, where i hated everyone so much i just couldn't keep playing. that and the card game was so restrictive and nowhere near as satisfying as triple triad.
Yeah I think it comes down (for me) whether I vibe with the setting/characters from the get go. FF12 for some reason I can't get into. From the beginning, I just don't get grabbed by the story like FF7, FF8, or FF10. It all feels a bit generic like anime Game of Thrones.
I did like FF10 very much, but I just vibed with the story less than FF7 and FF8, although the entire game is basically bigger, better, and the culmination of the PS1-PS2 and Playstation in general era of final fantasy. It's basically peak FF.
But FF7 and FF8 I liked because it starts as this very individual story with a brooding relatively mature character, and I guess at that point in my life I related a lot to it (FF8 being a student basically in on a campus was ultra relatable).
Final Fantasy X wins in:
- Story (by a big margin)
- Balancing.
Expedition 33 wins in:
- Art Direction
- Music
- Characters (but not overall plot)
- Gameplay (highly subjective)
- - I prefer Clair Obscur's gameplay, but not by much. They're both very good. I like what COE33 did with the AP system, which I find vastly superior to the MP system, the lumina system, the skills and the weapons. The large focus on dodge and parries is hit or miss. It's engaging but creates further balance issues, which this game already has problems with.
One of the dumbest stories and most annoying partys in the franchise.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also Blitzball is the dumbest ♥♥♥♥ ever invented in a video game.
Underwater handball is so mindnumbingly idiotic it actually elevates the game bit.
Ironically I'm replaying FFXIII right now, which is usually considered a worse FFX, and I'm really enjoying its faster & simpler take on the system.
I'd say my favorite FF game isn't even a mainline entry, it'd have to be FFT or A2
