- We are not going to debate wokism in France and link it to Expedition 33. Unless you want to inflict pain on yourself or reassure yourself.. About foreigners who say that France is woke... Not completely. Wokism is more present in universities, among young people aged 15 to 25, in certain companies, or communication in general. And among a good part of left-wing politics, to varying degrees... (which is not the majority but still represents approximately a good third, in its entirety, by combining the different forces). Not all left are wokes, and not all wokes are... WOKES. For once it's less contrasting than a "clair-obscur".
Even if it changes mentalities, much more for bad than for good in my opinion, but sometimes for good it must be recognized, it is not a question of a majority. And it is opposed by other forces and ideas (not always brilliant either).
- About Expedition 33, nothing we have seen and information that is available would suggest that a Woke force has painted woke ideas into the backdrop of Expedition 33. :) So stay calm. I think we're going to enjoy this game.
(That's me tapping the sign, in case it wasn't clear.)
3 words: Baldur's Gate 3
The most insanely inclusive progressive-leaned game around and has skyrocketed to being one of the best & best selling games in YEARS. Almost like the best route is to appeal to ALL audiences not just a select group and definitely not to bow to bigots that can't stand having anything other than cis-het around.
Some characters are female, and some of them are likely brown people. But because it's on PC, I'm sure you can find, or make a mod to make every character in your party and every NPC look identical so there is no diversity whatsoever.
DEI needs to be completely eliminated, otherwise it'll poison and ruin everything for everyone again.
Yeah, how those eggs, gas, mortgage, etc prices doing? Last I checked they've gone up and aren't looking to at all go down; porn is being blocked in certain states; medicaid/medicare /social security being threatened; cancer research being put on notice; healthcare threatened; rights being threatened; country threatening allies up to full on military intervention; only the richies get any tax cut; mass chaos; etc. But hey you get to try to go back to feeling special.
I'm proud of being on the other side of that coin in the "told you so" and "well FAFO" side of things. Oh and inclusivity is going nowhere, society has already turned that corner and regardless of the government arts, media, and decent people are going to maintain our stances on various things. Stuff like this just makes me root harder for the game to show a progressive core.
The one crowd keeps trying to yell about that while having to cherrypick and then try to do a "actually its not woke and is really the opposite!". "Go woke go broke" has and always will be a myth that relies on people not having a good memory.
Basically its actually the opposite of what you claim here, what has to be cherrypicked, are the successful games that are also woke and in most of these cases, the game was being carried by the brand, such are cases of the recent Spiderman and God of War games, Spiderman2 performing quite bad compared to the 1st because the cat was out of the bag, in this last case the word also spread quite far and wide in the Spanish community since that game butchered the Spanish VO in the name of wokeness.
BG3 is mega woke, anyone claiming otherwise is coping, that said it was also partly a bait and switch, since there were a lot of woke changes that were introduced close to the beta’s end, for most of the beta the game had proper male/female labels in the character creator for example. But in this case it comes down to ppl being simple, and excusing anything as long as its “optional” with no care for the lore or what came before, BG3 is trash, especially when compared to its predecessors, tons of cringe dialogue that isn't too far away from stuff you would see in Veilguard, but since a lot of it is optional and won’t be encountered by a large portion of players, it gets ignored, I mean look at all the apologists for KCD2, doesn’t matter the main characters lore is being broken because its “optional”, so that is one of the reasons BG3 has gotten away with it and sadly so will KCD2 I bet.
Its actually not as there's as many success stories as not. TLoU2 = success; Baldur's Gate 3; Mass Effect: Legendary Edition; Metaphor Refantazio; Horizon Forbidden West; Control; Alan Wake 2; Marvel's Spider-man; Marvel's Spider-man Miles Morales; Marvel's Spider-man 2; FF7R; God of War Ragnarok on the game side; and the bigger media landscape: Arcane; Barbie movie, Agatha All Along. Now what is the actual problem is ballooned budgets for games + corpos greed that require massive sales to make them happy. Its not a particular section of pathetic bigots whining cause a game dares to have non-white, non-straight characters.
Um no, BG3 literally blew up via a damn shape-shifter going bear mode to have sex with the PC; as well as a non-sexualized femme characters that weren't at all hidden. Once the game came out it also didn't retreat from its inclusive aspects; instead fully & whole-heartily leaning into them. As a result its one of the biggest selling games of its year and has has a lasting legacy.
I don't even play what I assume is "Kingdom Come" series and can easily say your type are total morons for pitching a damn fit over it. "mah characters being broken" (which it likely isn't). All I've heard is that it involves a same-sex kiss or something, which wouldn't break anything (bisexuality is a thing, growth of a character is a thing). Just like there being Black characters in Ragnarok isn't going to hurt your ass or the story being told. Its just dogwhistles for you to try to avoid being called a bigot, sexist, or racist. But ofc you have to toss in a comment of hedging in case it does well like with BG3; that way if you're proven wrong the myth isn't shattered. Like was done with the Barbie movie where it went from "Its WOKE! Its man-hating!" -> blows out the box office -> "Oh its actually a celebration of femininity, totally anti-woke, and is great. No wonder it filled theaters, take that libs!". "woke" or not has absolutely NOTHING to a game succeeding or failing, its a matter of if the game can break through and/or had someone keeping some degree of restraint on the budget. On top of that, Dragon Age was ALWAYS progressive-leaned offering LGBT+ options and PoC ones as well; Veilguard would've been fine if it'd stayed within a tighter budget + EA had given it more marketing push. Oh and may as well get ready cause Mass Effect 5 is also going to carry that forward, cause that series has ALWAYS delivered inclusive options as well (which it should given its set in the far far far future where not a damn soul is going to give a ♥♥♥♥).
Bigots & racists amount to likely around 5-10% playerbase, the rest are various people of all stripes (LGBT+, PoC, women, etc) that either don't give a single ♥♥♥♥ about if there's LGBT+, PoC, and badass femmes not thrown into fanservice or are pro it. That including straight white people that just want to enjoy art. Its so funny that I've spent 30+ years playing games with male characters & femme characters; straight & non-straight; and not once have I ever had an issue with it. Nor did anyone else till your type started trying to drum up damn culture wars over it.
I mean you plainly just said that making Norse mythological creatures black doesn’t matter… and that making a canonically straight character gay as “growth”. It is plain facts that games have changed a lot in the last decade, imo for the worst, but according to game journos and some devs it has changed for the best.
Either way, despite recent “claims that the industry is healing”, I am more sceptical, I actually do think my side is losing, games featuring only straight relationships are probably a thing of the past, especially if we consider the recent KCD2 debacle, I mean even China bends backwards for the progressive crowd, which can be seen even in their biggest games like Genshin Impact.
I’ve been keeping an eye on this game because the art and concept look nice, and the trailers seem to hint at the game focusing on straight relationships or family ties, that ofc could end up being completely different, so I will just wait and see.
And you sound like most incels in the 5-10% that want to hide behind the term "woke". The difference between us is one exists in reality, the other a bigoted view of things thinking everyone is as bigoted. I give people credit in that they aren't, which is shown in various media succeeding even against your side's nonstop trashing them.
Um no spiral downwards is them continuing to propagate the exact same white male hetero stories that have been told for centuries. Once again what they need to do is figure out how to reel in costs, while still delivering good stories that includes EVERYONE in them and ♥♥♥♥ the bigots.
Um God of War (2018) and Ragnarok aren't at all retcons, they do allow Kratos to y'know mature and go through character growth; which I know is anathema to your type who'd rather just have the raging edgelord version of the character.
Um you need to look again, because Forbidden West, TLoU2, ME: Legendary, Spiderman 2, and GoW2 WERE successful. Hell I can get thinking Forbidden West was about even and Spiderman 2's costs made it near impossible for it to break even; but GoW2, TLoU2, and ME: Legendary there isn't a damn debate. They sold incredibly well AND like the others got critical praise on top of that.
No, I don't give two ♥♥♥♥♥ about whether characters in a fictional game are matching the white vision in your head or not. I'm here for an interesting story. I also have stated that I don't know the details on supposed "straight character", but would wager 3 scenarios:
1) they were never actually declared straight, you headcanoned that
2) they were shown with an opposite gender partner and because of your own ignorance/bigotry you fail to realize that bi is a thing
3) you fail to grasp that sexuality is very much a spectrum where someone can show up to flip that switch. I should know given I would've said I was straight for 20+ years of my life, before running into someone that flipped that switch in my head. So its a very real thing.
Now here's where I can actually do nuance cause I do think some forms of inclusion are a bit too on the nose. But having inclusion overall IS a good thing, because the world isn't all white, not all cis, and not all straight. Not all stories to be told are from those either and there's an entire array of not done ones waiting to be told.
a) I don't think straight relationships are going to disappear, they'll just balance (which is the truly hilarious part of the whole thing, the needle moves .05% from hetero and your side pitches a fit) cause the heteronormative is too strong for that; BUT b) there is an absolutely valid reason for more games to not go for straight in the options it expands. A bi/pan protag = a cast of 8 where only 4 are available via straight suddenly becomes 8 romance interests. On top of having new interesting stories to tell.
There is nothing in the trailers shown so far that suggest straight relationships at all. Like I can at least see the "like family" angle; but I also see the look Sciel gave to Lune as they were very much romantically coded laying together in the newest trailer. That's what I'm hoping to see get developed and bigots can cope and seethe over it; if it does go that direction.
