(Spoilers) Any theories on the rest of the game?

So what exactly do we think the glowing hole is?

Also what could have possibly happened that they all decided to never speak to each other for so long and go their own ways?

And for some reason they've all forgotten what happened but seem to be slowly remembering events.

Then we have the reveal that Kat has cancer. So far we haven't seen an adult Kat. Do you think she survived? If she is still alive I wonder what she'll be doing in modern times.

I'm guessing whatever happened to split them has something to do with the glowing hole but I wonder what exactly is it and what could have happened.

My top theory is that the abyss is a wormhole and Future Kat is inside it
basing this on the Abyss tape voice-over and the missing miners + Gil Davidson (Articles in the pool room)
My guess is Future Kat is at the bottom yelling instructions up at past Kat. That's why she had perfect timing when saving Swann, that's why she was the one to find the abyss and that's why the girl's are having memory issues. (Because the past is changing) Maybe the group didn't originally meet Kat on the 7th but later in the summer. Now with Future Kats intervention that has changed to them all meeting on the same day.

My guess on why the girl's promised to never meet again is either:
Kat fell down they abyss on the 12th (That might explain why it's marked on Swanns calendar before she meets the girl's) and the girl's just felt so guilty they promised to never meet again. Then Kat starts messing with the past which causes them to actually forget what happened
Or
Some intergalactic agency wiped their memorise

Which leads me to a questions I would like to add to the theorising (Let me know if this is too off topic and I'll edit it out)

Do you think the Aliens are a red herring or a chekhov's gun?
I'm leaning towards red herring, I think the "Grey gang" could be the miners. Maybe they're trying to keep people in the abyss with them (I don't know what reason they would have for abduction Fred though)
If they are aliens, Maybe they're some authority on the abyss and want people to stop messing with it. Maybe the Grey Gang wipes the girl's memory and sends them on their way at the end.

It's nice to read people's theories in episodic game forums. It reminds me of times after the first episode of LIS came out.
