DLC explanation
Does the DLC add new characters you can play as while youre playing through the main game? Or are the characters only playable in the dlc missions?

Ibuki-Douji, Gilgamesh/Boss, Yagyu Munenori, Zhao Yun, and Kishimijon all become playable as substitutable Servants. Rider is exclusive to Battle Recollections.

I see but when do you unlock them and how? Do I need to actually complete the dlc to unlock them? If so isn't the dlc intended to be played in the final chapter?

You do need to complete their respective DLC episodes to unlock them, the level and unlock requisites puts it off at as early as mid Chapter 3 (if you grind via Battle Recollections) or Chapter 5 at latest.
  • DLC 1 unlocks at the start of Chapter 2, but has a minimum level requisite of 45. You have to wait until Chapter 5 for Caster's story to unlock Ibuki-Douji and then Final Chapter for Rider & Lancer's stories for Gilgamesh. Iori will only have Earth/Water/Wind Stance and no Noble Phantasms.
  • DLC 2 unlocks at the start of Chapter 3, but has a minimum level requisite of 50. While you can beat it for Yagyu Munenori and do get Saber's NP, you still won't have Fire Stance, Void Stance, or Rogue Servant Noble Phantasms.
  • DLC 3 unlocks halfway through Chapter 3, but has a minimum level requisite of 60. Battle Recollections unlock so you can grind the Great Orochi fight to then obtain Zhao Yun and Kishimojin. You will have Fire Stance, but now all your Rogue Servants are inaccessible besides Rogue Berserker (if you beat him during his first Digression before it expired in early Chapter 2).
  • If you proceed with the story, you're locked in until the start of Chapter 5, where you get Void Stance, Rogue Caster and your Rogue Servants back (besides Rogue Berserker who's gone until NG+), and can get NPs for them.

Mostly your should just wait until you're about to beat the game. As for me, I started the DLCs at level 55 and I will have reached 60 by the time I start DLC 3. As for the final two routes in DLC 1, I'll see if there is a way to start them after chapter 5, but before starting NG+.
As for difficulty, I guess if you can beat Gilgamesh in his digression without eating 10+ meals, it means you can beat the 1st DLC without any issues. I don't expect any DLC fight to be purposefully harder than Gil. He was an hp sponge.
Anyone knows how to get out from the DLC? I already finish the first chapter I thought I can get out but no can do. this is the DLC where Gil is the main event
