Merchant in an isolated area. I forgot the name of the area, but he's just chillin on a mountain area. That, and pick up a lot of 'em. They'll also show up in random battles occasionally if I recall correctly.

About that ninja trainee I have visited all of above and double checked to make sure but still the last one dude won't show up. For merchants I'll try revisiting Akasaka and Kanagawa in the next run. This is driving me insane.

If you want to unlock later digressions in the tree, then yes. That, or get duplicate items. Tamamo Aria's is worth redoing, as it ends by giving you 3 culinary delights, which are EXCELLENT items you should save for the hardest of battles.

I wouldn't know the answer to this; I just did every digression every chance I got.
