What kind of controllers can I use for this?

It seems I can't play with a keyboard, and the only controllers I do have with USB support (Pokken & Gamecube for Switch) are incompatible. What kind of controller can I buy that'll work with this game?

The game has dedicated settings for the Steam controller but it's nothing special. Basically it just has the gyro in addition to normal Xbox controller controls.

I used a DualSense controller and it worked quite well for me, emulating almost all of the functions that a Steam Deck would have, including gyro. The trackpads are also mapped to both sides of the touch pad.

Spoilers for those who haven't played the game yet:Since the DualSense doesn't have back paddles, the sequence near the end of the game where you have to press all four to rocket yourself up to Cave Johnson's office is emulated by simply pressing L1, R1, L2, and R2 simultaneously.

I can't use controllers on plain Linux with an xbox controller.

Okay, so I plugged in my old Xbox controller (which I forgot I had) into my laptop, and, unlike the other failed controllers I tried, it still tells me to plug in a controller. Why isn't the Xbox controller working?

Any Xbox, PS4/5, or XInput controller will work fine. I used a regular PS4 controller paired via bluetooth and it was pretty good. Note that the game uses Steam Input so you do NOT need a program like DS4Windows for PS controller support. The game will recognise the controller on it's own just fine.

I was able to complete it on GNU/Linux with a USB Xbox 360 controller.

Wow, that actually works. I had no idea it connects to PCs, thanks. Now I don't have to buy one or fix my Xbox controller

I've actually used a pro controller on my PC and never learned it had gyro, neat.

A PS3 controller worked fine for me, but the gyro weirdly did not work even though they have gyro, might've been something about Linux's PS3 controller driver or something? You can beat it without gyro though, it's just there for more granular aim, in addition to one of the joysticks.
