Is this game worth a buy?

Long time fan of the UG series. I got into UG Gettysburg way back when it came out and loved it! I didnt think Ultimate admiral was that good, but it wasnt bad either. My absolute favourite of the series was UG Civil war, despite the insanely hard tutorials. I have completed several campaigns in UG:CW and it is without a doubt one of my favourite games of all time.

Anyway, my question is if it is worth it to buy this game? I have eagerly awaited it as the mechanics and campaign, fog of war etc looks promising and a great step forward from UG:CW, but now I am hearing concerning news that the game is dead and riddled with bugs...

TLDR: Longtime fan of the series, is the game worth it or is it dead and suffering from bugs?

I just finished both campaigns, they each have their own challenges as you pick Americans or British. I found that sending resources to Britain the most challenging because merchant ships kept getting sunk. The Americans need to manage native relations and taxes very carefully. I was able to win as both nations, so it is possible. The game engine struggles a bit once the whole map is unlocked but its not really a problem, just a bit of lag sometimes with lots of units on the map and the time sped up. I should mention that I am running a 4070 so it may be worse for some people. I appreciated the character personality creation options that actually impact your starting stats and I enjoyed renaming some units after actual historic ones. Little things in game like the ability to edit unit names is always nice. Unfortunately the auto-generated officers have stupid names that you cannot change, but I can live with it because you don't really need to deal with them too often. If you like the series it is well worth the money IMO. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah its a fun game. If you like Ultimate General games you'll love this. The campaign is great. It's just buggy as hell unfortunately.

I would add it to your wishlist and wait for a sale. Its worth $30. Don't get the premium edition because the dev's aren't working on it anymore.

The above two people didn't mention that you won't be fighting historical battles. It is just auto generated random battles based off how good/bad you are doing. So it's a lot different from UG:CW in that regard.

From my other post on this forum "To compare, Ultimate General: Gettysburg was being launched at the price of around $15 and then after a while the price went up to $19.99. As for Age of Sail, it lunched and continued at $29.99. Finally, Civil War came out and continued also at $29.99. These are, of course, regular prices but there were also discounts during sales."

So, considering this game isn't in good shape - bugs galore - it's actually worth LESS than the regular "series price", which seems to be $29.99. I'd probably buy it for less than $20.

Games can be hard for new players to the genre. On the other hand, I just got bored on the hardest difficulty—over 40k troops landed in New York. But since the AI is weak as hell, you can cheese the game pretty easily, and it gets repetitive grinding down an enemy that has 10–20 times more troops but is just "dumb".

Overall, not worth a buy. Better to play Civil War :)

you shouldn't pay money for this game, it is incomplete and abandoned, play the older titles if you enjoy UG. Game could of been a lot better but we will never know.

yes game is great. a few bugs but game is fun. especially fun if a fan of the revolution.

This is a cheap stripped-out copy of Total War.

If you like the methodical pacing, tactical command and control, managing your army organization and officers like in UGCW or UAAoS, you will be sorely disappointed.

The battles are fast paced clickfests like in Total War. You can't even assign / change brigade and regimental officers or ship captains.

Instead you build weaver's huts, carpenter's hovels, and sell tobacco in the docks. It is pure nonsense.

This game was almost Something Special and then failed to stick the landing. Will go down as a missed opportunity in gaming history.
