Merchant and Transport Ships (American Campaign)

I know this is going to sound like a dumb question but what are their purpose in the American campaign? Just for gold or do you need the, in storage to conduct trade or (transports) move troops down the coast? Or are they just to raise revenue?

I can’t find a reason to construct merchant ships in American campaign but transport ships are used to transport troops in late game when you have control of sea and need to transport troops faster as old players said

thank you. I was trying to find out if they were actually needed for trade/cargo (like in the British campaign). Thanks for answering that.
