I did get attacked while exploring the map during the day 3 Blood Moon, they spawned about 50m from me and just followed me forever till I killed them, because I wasn't waiting till morning lol.
So I'm wondering if the Blood Moon events are "Spawn Near Player" and the Invasion "Portal" that spawns is "Spawn Near Eye of Odin".
Pathing to the eye matters as well. See my recent post about the portal spawning right in/next to the large spire!

I didn't mention in that post that for the 3rd winter I had fixed some pathing next the Eye and the portal showed up basically opposite direction from the spire.
They use a 'heat map' to determine weak points in walls and population density it seems.
Enemies prefer to use roads as well. So if you are trying to predict where the invasion is headed, they will use nearby roads.
So, yes, you could make a steep sided hill, well away from village and perch the eye up there maybe with walls to protect from arrows and jump up to get at and use the eye. Enemies wouldn't know what to do out there by themselves. ;(
Me, I'm a put it at center of everything type! Prepare my warrior/archers and usually take the fight to them! (see my videos section)
Without Eye of Odin, invasions will still happen they will head for player I think. Specifically your location when they spawn. So if you move away from there they only pursue from there if they see you.
