Good ways to keep a constant supply of food.

I have been struggling to find ways to keep a constant food supply. I have 5 villagers right now. I have hunters hut that helps a bit. I've gathered pretty much everything close to me. I haven't set up a farm, however part of the reason I haven't is that you need to have rotten food for fertilizing the crops, however I have no food to spoil as it is being eaten right away. My location is not really close to many animals, so hunting them has been very difficult.

Any advise / hints someone can offer would be appreciated.

you dont need the rotten food fertilizer to grow crops. Sure, they grow better with it, but is not needed to grow some.

I starved in my first run so trust me. Get a Farm asap and grown 50/50 veggies and Flax. You'll need constant fiber/rope for everything and they really do grow quite a bit of produce, even without compost. I had 3 farm plots with plenty of food for 25 people (except for them stealing stacks at the warehouse grrrrr).

Thanks for the info everyone. It looks like I need to get some farms up and running asap. If I recall you have to select an area adjacent ground that will be your fields. Is there any concern about the size of it, or should you always just try to make it as large as possible?

2 Hunting Houses, I've got so much meat I honestly don't know what to do with it. 50 people

Hunters for winter, fishermen for summer, gatherers for in-between .. for farming you really need an excess of fish so that you can decay it into compost.
