Some random skellington tore it down before I could cover the distance to stop him, so I don't know what setting up a "trade route" means exactly.
Building roads is so incredibly obtuse and broken, I gave up on that idea. (you can't just pave a path, you have to flatten the terrain and then pave it, and it's grid based, so there's no easy good looking way I've found to do slopes and such).
And the pops are very very very fickle about doing their jobs even when standing right next to their station, I'm not sure how much faith I would place in them to feed and equip themselves if they were halfway across the map being spooked by wulfars all day.
ive gotten roads to work fine long as you clear the terrain with a hoe before making the road, teh hoeing usually smooths out sharp inclines too but it is finicky, yes. and yeah, using the terrain flattening is faster for some areas, but i've played games before that were way more intensive than this one for making roads.
i would like to see a "Hey, you come with me" option for villagers to have them follow you and assist with nearby tasks. stuff like, if you chop a tree, they chop a tree, if you gather something they gather the next nearest something. if you attack something they attack it too, no questions. something like that would be amazing for things like blood moons and invasions.
dont flatten when you are outside the village... make your main roads close to your village, and from there just use the hoe to prepare the ground for a road, it does not matter if it goes up and down, only take care for realy steep slopes
So you just have to manually go along the ground inch by inch clearing a jagged path with the hoe, and then go do it all over again with the roadmaker.
It does look much better this way, but it's no less tedious than I described previously.
