Alternatively you can try to find iron scraps. It works same way as iron ore.
- kill bosses (every boss has a guarantee drop 4-6 iron scraps and respawn once a year);
- kill skeletons. They are easier to kill and require building hammer to deconstruct it's body. Also drop bones (useful for creating arrows for your hunters). Chance to harvest iron scrap approximately 15%
- kill Draugr. Tougher to kill, however can be found in large quantities (easier to collect loot). Require mining pick to harvest boby, pretty durable (220hp),also drop stones and Jotun blood. Chance to harvest iron scrap about 10%.
The iron picks, iron axes, iron knife, and iron hammers are worth it IMO for the villagers. Build a broken metals container in your warehouse and the warehouse workers will collect the used axe, pick, , knife, and hammer heads for you to remake into new tools. They are infinitely reusable and boost work efficiency. The other tools/weapons are less worth it, as they require nails to recraft.
Iron scraps from monsters - infinite.
