I've personally gone almost a whole season without one at times, so I think it's pretty random. You may have just had bad luck.
Try to make the higher end club ASAP because you can almost one-shot wights with that. Skels with shields take a little finesse before you have armor. Try to strike just after they've taken a swing at you, and practice rolling. You can usually solo the blood moons pretty easily once you're more comfortable with combat.
Also remember that the spawn marker for blood moons shows on the map and on your hud on the compass. If you'll stay a little back from it you can watch it at night and keep them off your village.
Good luck.
