Issues with Fishing production?
My base is a bit inland, so I set up a little fishing outpost as close as possible and built a road to it. I added a warehouse and barracks nearby, but its productivity has been sketchy at best. Here are some issues I'm running into (let me know if I'm missing something):

1. Villagers assigned as fisherman don't know how to make bait so they're useless until you give them this resource.
2. There doesn't seem to be a task to make bait - at least not in the hut, maybe it's an option in the house? I don't recall seeing it anywhere though.
3. You cant task and prioritize the creation of filets - only whole fish unlike the hunters building where you can prioritize racks of meat or cuts of meat.
4. There doesn't seem to be a way cook whole fish the whole fish cannot be grilled or added to the crockpot at the cooking house - even though there's icons for grilled fish in the warehouse inventory menus.
5. The villagers collecting the whole fish from the fisherman's hut and transporting it to the warehouse and the one transporting between warehouses are somewhat unreliable. Particularly the delivery villager who will randomly abandon the sled when it's quitting time and does not consistently use the road I tediously paved to the warehouse.
6. Thankfully, villagers assigned to the grill and cookhouses know how to go into the warehouse to harvest a whole fish, but they do it right there in the warehouse, and often leave harvested goods on the floor.
7. Whole fish should be harvestable in your inventory with shift+left click just like many of the other resources that can be broken down in a similar way (bark, leather, pelts, etc.)
8. Whole fish should yield more than one filet
9. Fishermen should always stand on the dock probably a pathing bug, but I had one fishermen standing waste deep in the ocean in winter when he was out of bait and didn't know what to do with himself.
10. I've seen notes in game indicating that different bait catches different fish, but as far as I can tell my fishermen have only ever caught sea bass using fish bait and berry bait.

Maybe the building will be more effective when I can finally get it upgraded to a house over a hut, and get a rowboat built (my cave ran dry and I'm out of nails at the moment), but right now it seems like fishing is a rather ineffective way to feed my villagers. The building doesn't produce that much and it's a pain to have to restock the bait.

no, it doesn't change much when you upgrade it to a house, as far as making bait. HOWEVER, they can fish without bait sometimes, and they can gather a LOT of fish.. to the point where the storage overflows.. but it's hit or miss.

I admit I've been in the position where I just make a crap tonne of bait and two rods and hand it over. I run down with a sled once they're at 20 fish. But you're right it's a little cumbersome.

In the future I intend to build closer to the water hoping that the cook/warehouser will save me the trouble.

I have no problem at all, my guy makes his own bait out of fish, now if you take all the fish and they run out of bait that is when you will have the issue, you need more food source to keep a small amount of fish in stock, also helps to add some to the warehouse.

FYI you need to skin the fish with a knife, a cook NPC can do that on their own.

where do you filet the fish, in cook house only or? i can't seem to figure out how to do it, doesn't do it like the bark.

I gave up on fishing, i didnt want to build the road and it made more sense to just get a second hunters hut or whatever. Meat to cooked meal production seems to take care of itself well, just needs someone making bows and arrows.

I was hoping to find rivers that i would use to fish out of inland, as the coast sucks to build with all the non resource beach rock. Maybe a small lake or two would do.

How were you getting the fish from the hut storage into your in town warehouse so food people could use it? sled?

I tried using the market place and assigning a villager to transport goods between my warehouse near the docks with my main one in town. It kind of works, but the transporter villager is super sketchy.

I didnt got solution for the Fillets but the Fishing hut is the best way "hands down" for the Compost for your farms just let them fist they use theyr own fist to make baits and all the fish just rots there while farmest pick it up as compost.

I never made bait for fishermen. In my play through with 150 or so villagers, three warehouses were usually fully stocked with fish (12+ full racks each). The key was making sure they had defenses that covered their work area, a warehouse employee working a warehouse nearby with fish racks, and the summer angler/fishing traits.

What I did have issue with was having more than one fisherman at a time on a structure. The second one would normally sit further back on the hut or house and not do anything while the first one fished. I ended up making 11 fishing huts and one fishing house. I also assigned some fishermen to work at night next to a tower that was manned at night.

Bonus points if you set the layout right, and you have towers covering their fishing area and also their sleeping quarters with a cool making fish soup nearby (provide food easily and fire during winter for warmth)

I have some issues with the fisherman as well. Initially when it was just a fishing hut the fisherman made their own bait out of who knows and just did their thing. I'd go there every so often to find the fishing storage full and piles of rotten fish beside it.

Then, I set up a proper warehouse+market thing to transport the fish back to my village. I go to check on the fisherman and they're complaining they have no bait, while standing in a pile of it they've chucked on the ground for some reason, and won't go back to work until I pick up their bait for them and put it back in the container.

I thought maybe I should put a bait storage in the warehouse beside the fishing area so that if the fisherman throws it on the ground the warehouse guy might pick it up for him, but I can't figure which, if any, storage container will hold bait

I have to say though, needing a fisherman's hut AND a warehouse AND a market with staff for all 3, just to have fish, is excessive. Especially when the fisherman just stops working and you don't know because they are too far away to complain to you and now they no longer complailn after-hours around the cooking hut.

Markets should absolutely have the capability of going straight from hut to warehouse, instead of needing a starting warehouse. It would be less efficient in the general case, but save a large headache for things like this.

I always have way more fish than I can keep up with, they are laying on the ground so I have to run down and pick them up and take them to my warehouse. Then my cookhouse girl will fillet them and cook them. I think we just need more storage at the fish hut so they aren't laying on the ground rotting

idk how i did it but my fisherman is catching non stop fish and making his own meat lures, as long as he always has a fishing rod and raw meat available he been good for me. good thing about fishing is you can eat the fish raw non stop,

I'm having a problem with the fishing cabin too. I can't afford the materials to build it. And he's not the only one giving me a hard time with this. :slugcatdead:

I read this thread and thought "Now I can fix my food problems!"

But my fisherman is catching around 3 fish per day for a dozen or more villagers. I have no idea how to make him go faster.
