WTF DOES SCHEDULE BALANCE MEAN.
I know it is not the day/night thing (some villagers prefer night)

Seems like half my villagers suffer this debuff putting them at -50 disposition. Its very annoying. What am I supposed to guess what hours they like? Anytime someone leaves its because of this. This needs to be changed asap

The current meta of villagers seems to go like this: Recruit as many as you can and the ones that stay are the ones that stay. I do not want to cycle through villagers like this

things like decorations, food , water wells, worship stations(u have to have someone assigned to get the buff) add to the villagers morale, so even though the schedule balance is negative they will continue to go up. you can also save schedules for future use like a day shift schedule/ night shift schedule. hope this helps

Schedule balance means they have a bad mix of work, leisure, sleep. Most of them don’t like the default settings. If you’re adding more work time or removing leisure it will get worse.

yes but you counteract the bad with "morale boosters" and u can work them normally and they will continue to go up, also traits play a role as a "battle scared veteran" will get warrior boost in moral if put on barracks

So just guess. Is that what you are saying? Did you read my post? This is exactly what should not happen

This is the colony management aspect of the game… learn to manage your people. Either adjust their work to leisure ratio to make them happy or add other things to boost morale.

Sounds like a skill issue

Make sure you use the scheduling system to craft custom schedules. I've addressed almost 100% of morale issues by putting night-owls on night schedules, then creating a daytime schedule for the norms with an extra block of leisure about mid-day. They'll go stare at the fire or sit around the god-totem and start creeping up to 100% morale. YMMV

I'm having the same issue as OP. I have different schedules for my night and day villagers, as well as blocks in the middle of their work day for leisure. Yet every one of my villagers has a negative schedule balance. I don't know what else to do. And I'm well aware that you can offset that debuff with other buffs, as I'm sure OP is as well. That isn't the issue we're trying to address. How do we fix the root problem?

I put my,
Day people on leisure 4 and 5 am Work Till Leisure at 19-20 sleep the rest
Night people Leisure at 7-8 sleep till leisure at 16-17 work the rest.
For the winter till they are clothed (except cooks and healers) add 1 leisure at 12 for day and 0 for night. Don't forget decor to help with the unhappiness.

Thats pretty similar to how I do, Sweety :)
The night people work at night and get a rest hour at the middle of their shift. I also gave the day-guys a rest hour ... they all get around pretty well with that. Some of course also don't like WEATHER and you can't do much against that. So there should be some other nice boosts around too xD
having a break mid work shift is bad, they drop all their stuff on the ground which they do not pick back when returning to work, waste time heading to somewhere for 5 seconds then return to what they were doing wasting more time.

The rest during the middle of the shift is only during the first winter when I don't have clothes for everyone. I remove the middle of the day rest after they aren't freezing. And anyone with the chill debuff I put as cooks or healers and they never get the middle of the day rest during winter.

Oh that's why I constantly find tools laying around!

Havent't played for a while, but in my last game this was not really an issue. Most, if not all, of my settlers had that debuff, but were still very happy overall. I never found out how much leisure they need for that to actually go away.... As long as you care about the other needs, this can be ignored.
