How to protect my village against the bear attack on day 17?

It seems rather difficult to protect my village and villagers, any have good suggestions? Feels very frustrating to keep losing stuff over and over and not progress because things break over and over

Build a second tier fence and provide better weapons to villagers. The bear attacked me in the middle of the night, and once the lazy people woke up, they engaged and killed the bear for me. I think I had 7 villagers at that time and one died.

If the bear agroed on me, I would run and hid behind a fence or building and he would reengage with the villagers.

I just kited the bear around trees until he got bored and left, I tried to hit him a couple times but the bites I received in trade seemed to be a good guide that it would be a losing battle.

You are correct about using resources to maintain shelters over and over again.
