What makes villagers happy?
So it says 7 of my villagers are happy but I don't know what makes them happy. The only thing that's going negative values is the work hours but those are default. Do I need to build something?

If you hit tab and then click on one of the unhappy villagers, it’ll tell you why they’re in that state. Both in the upper right and lower left of that villagers profile.

Also on one of their tabs you can adjust their work hours to whatever you want. Give them more leisure time also set them to work the hours they like (some love working at night, some hate it).

There's not a lot of contextual information in the game. But if any of their needs meters (food, water, cold, etc.) get low they'll get angry. There are also perks that contribute and detract from villagers happiness. For the ones that like being up at night, you should manually change their activity cycle so they sleep during the day.

They also seem to get pissed if they work too much, do work they don't like, see a monster, or feel unsafe (because your town defense or their particular station is not defended).

I found that if you assign them to the barracks or archery range, their happiness will go up again, so you can cycle them through those buildings when they get too unhappy.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I appreciate the assistance. For the village.

Is there a way to tell what shift a particular villager would prefer to work?

Sometimes they have traits that say. But apparently most of them just prefer not to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ work at all.

Yeah my villagers hate working, love eating and drinking all the water and they're ecstatic about complaining about the defences. I mean I have 4 towers, 3 hedge towers, and not enough people but too many people for food consumption so I can't get more.

I gave my day people 7 hours sleep, 2 leisure, 4 hours work, 1 leisure, 4 hours work and finally 4 hours leisure. pretty standard day really? nope. Unhappy.

They're lazy - give them more leisure time.

Just play with the work and leisure hours, Some like a short work day and others dont. But purely economic reasons, I keep mine at 13 hr work days. Keep half working dayshift and the other nightshift.

Also, avoid the debuffs during storms and rain like the plague. I always save before I summon, and if both have these debuffs, I'll reload with an Alt-F4. Doing this, I've ended up with very few of these annoying buggers and I don't have a single unhappy villager even though they work 11 hours (1 hour of leisure in the middle for water/food breaks) and all crammed like sardines in cottages.

I usually give them 9 hours of sleep, 2 or 3 hours of leisure time and the rest (12-13h) work time. I gave them the Totem thing to sit and talk, cottages, food from the kitchen and everything is "covered" in security. Also I respect those that like or dislike certain daytimes...that seems to be enough to have them around 90-100 happiness most of the time.

Im glad i saw this post about making people happy in your village. Imo i cant stand games that have this mechanic because thats all the game is really about is making them happy. City and building now becomes a secondary thing because if they aint happy then non of it matters or will work anyways. Ill find a different game that is actual building and crafting first then making people happy.

Not the case here really...yes there is this happiness mechanic, but its not really a major thing (at least for me). I just build stuff and never had any problems with villagers being unhappy or even leaving
