So if we're comparing games, I'd say Wylde Flowers is roughly between 'Stardew Valley' and 'My Time at Portia'.

Wylde Flowers' story is very different from both, and it is far more story focused than Stardewvalley. It includes the farming, foraging, ranching, building, mining mechanics, though they have their own distinctive feel to them. The npcs have (from my entirely subjective experience) far greater depth and feel more human and relatable than either Stardew or MTAP (though mods to Stardew expanding NPC dialogue bring it closer).

While Wylde Flowers has some obvious nods to other games in the genre (like the mayor playing the 'Get to know everyone' game with you when you start), the story and characters quickly branch out from there. The story and characters go off in very different directions. In SV your player character is a blank slate, and moves to the valley after their grandparent died. In MTAP your character had a father who lived in Portia, who you'll briefly meet, but that's the extent of the pre-written backstory. In WF the main character is already a character with her own backstory and personality. It feels more like playing her story (which i enjoy) than creating your own (which also has its charms).

Wylde Flowers' USP is the magic, and it's not a token extra skill, but a full set of skills/abilities, questlines and characters. It also has a much greater emphasis on mysteries and detective work than either of the other games. From pretty early on you're aware there are witches in the community and will need to pay attention to what people say and how they act to discover their identities.

Wylde Flowers also has a greater emphasis on diversity (in terms of gender identity, sexuality, and race), which is great if this is something you look for in games (as I do). I also feel it's integrated into the story and gameplay very organically, while everyone is a little cartoonish, no one feels like a mean caricature or strawman. People feel fleshed out and like complete people rather than "This is the gay character, this is the black character, this is the trans character" with no other personality trait (which is sadly what can often happen in games, also books, tv, films...)

So in conclusion, I'd say that while Wylde Flowers is definitely in the genre epitomised by Stardew Valley, it has it's own unique flavour and gameplay style.

Hope this helps!

You guys are already bored with these rippoffs of XXX... This is another game of this genre, no rippoff, the story is completely different and the game is great. If you don't like it, play Stardew Valley instead, no one is defending you. (btw SV is also good one!)

Dont be an idiot. Its just a game in the same GENRE.
You know.. like the thousands of FPS games that exist- do you think they are all crap because they are just like doom??

Im sure this game has many unique elements and that even things it shares with SD are done differently. If that is your moronic attitude i HOPE you only have like 10 games on steam- one in each genre.

He/She actually has a lot of "rip off" games in their library. :lunar2019laughingpig:

Seriously please learn what genre means. This game is not a rip off of stardew
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

i appreciate the actual response, i only made this post because every review was just saying its like this or like that. when reviewers cant even tell enough original content for review then its really nothing special as an outside buyer

this game may be inspired by Stardew, but no disrespect to that game (because I love it), but it's an evolutionary improvement in almost every way imaginable.

i think it resemble this nintendo game stardew stole from more
Abyss Cat Jan 4, 2024 @ 2:41am
Stardew itself is literally a copy of Story of Seasons with Animal Crossing, Rune Factory and Terraria features lmao. Imaging thinking that SDV is the original game and everybody's "ripping off" from it, not from true pioneers of this genre
