Will I be lost?
Last Ratchet and Clank game I played was Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal.

Do I need to play the games before this one to not be lost, or can I jump right in and be up to speed on the story?

It's designed to be accessible to new players. The story will be more impactful if you've played Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, and Into the Nexus, but you don't need to play them to understand what's going on. It gives you the important details.

the game got a reboot for this game and the 1 before witch was just a remake of the first game story but with a few changes. here's the recap caption qurk is now a good guy not a total ♥♥♥♥, he regrets hes choice from the first game selling them out for a spot on the new planet and helps them stop the big bad guy. he goes to jail and isnt a total ♥♥♥♥ this time around and helps, ratchet and clank are heros, and this game takes place after the new reboot story line takeing place after 1st game. oh and alot of the small details are out and rushed. if you remember the very first game and just replace qurk being a total ♥♥♥♥ to a regretful ♥♥♥♥ your cought up

The game tells you everything that you need to know during the tutorial level, briefly recapping the relevant parts of the PlayStation 3-era games.

Like @ TheMoonRover said, it's "best" if you've played Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, and Nexus first, but they're not "mandatory".

Only the one before, actually. Rift Apart continues the story of the PlayStation 3 games (in which the PlayStation 2 games are also canon, although not "relevant" to the PlayStation 3/5 storyline).

And Quest for Booty, which takes place between Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time.

The PS2 games have little to nothing to do with the later games, they are more or less a separate canon.
