For those crashing recently
NVIDIA 572.16 drivers broke DirectStorage (GPU Decompression), so the game might frequently crash, freeze, hang, stutter or load objects, textures and menus with a delay.

To workaround this, disable DirectStorage. Go to the directory of the game and rename both dstorage.dll and dstoragecore.dll to something like dstorage.dll.bak and dstoragecore.dll.bak.

Now, the game should work as it used to.

Edit: Method 2: try to upgrade DirectStorage
Go here: https://www.nuget.org/packages/Microsoft.Direct3D.DirectStorage
On the right side, click "Download package".
Use 7-zip to extract the nupkg file.
The updated DirectStorage DLLs are located at native -> bin -> x64
This could help mitigate the crashes.

Edit 2: Do not read comments as they do not add anything constructive to this.

Edit 3: 572.42 drivers didn't solve the problem. Either downgrade the driver to 56x.xx or do any of the above.

I just really hope this crap hasn't done any permanent damage to my NVME drive, every time I've been able to open task manager before Windows completely froze up my drive was pegged at 100%.

No, it won't damage your NVMe, it's just annoying.
I'm using these drivers and the game is stable aside from planet torren IV where it always crashed with RT on.
The game appears just as stable and smooth everywhere else in the game using the latest drivers.
RTX 4080 / 7800x3d.
I only just started playing it finally and I currently have everything on max, native rendering + fram gen (debating if I think this looks better than DLSS quality with no frame gen) with a 4090 and so far the only time I get stutters is for a split second when loading a new large area. So has been really few and far between. Otherwise all the issues mentioned have been non existent.

How does this help anyone? You TL;DR: "It just works on my machine, I don't have this problem". You just wasted 15 to 22 seconds of some people's life right now.

Instead, you wasted around 9 to 14 seconds of somebody's life, congrats.

Alright so I'm not the only one with that issue

There must be something wrong with that planet because after finishing the missions there the crash with rt on happens, playing with a 4070 super and I don't have any performance issues with rt on besides that planet after finishing it

You made a false statement saying the new drivers caused issues, all I did was point out that they, in fact, did not. Sorry bud.

Focusing on semantics now? Massive red flag my friend. It's enough to check the GeForce forums and these forums to see how many people are complaining about these drivers.
You said you don't have issues with these drivers, but you cannot say objectively that these drivers didn't cause issues. There are plenty of people who downgraded their drivers and fixed the issue. Also:
1) I have experienced the problem myself, which is final proof for me that these drivers are not that great
2) all of my friends have the same issue after installing these drivers, removing directstorage fixes the problem
3) a lot of people complain about this as also mentioned earlier.
On a side note, RTX 5000s are fine, apparently.

And remember, "IT WORKS ON MY MACHINE" is NOT a solution and doesn't help anyone.

Ok, but different systems and configurations can lead to different experiences. While the drivers may work perfectly for you, others, including myself, have encountered crashes or problems! It's not about making false statements, but rather sharing our experiences to help find solutions for everyone. Saying "it's all false, works on my machine" and deny the reality, the problems or even accuse others of false claims, it's only about ragebait and doesn't really help anyone.. Or worse, means that you actually don't understand how a PC works and that not everyone has your exact machine

There are also other users experiencing crashes with new drivers, as I will link in the source below:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/556589/driver-57216-causing-massive-issues/

The OP said that the update specifically broke DirectStorage as if it was a universal statement. When in fact, it's not and it works fine for me and many others. So it may have caused issue with your specific setup, but not all. :)

You are adding nothing of value, (almost) everyone is able to undestand that the OP isn't about trying to point that they broke DirectStorage on every single PC in the world or game in existence, but trying to report a problem encountered with the latest drivers, and reporting what the problem actually is (nvidia broke the DS with latest drivers).. This fact is so obvious, that probably wasn't worth mentioning, but I guess it was due to people super smart like you

P.S.: I find really sad that you can't even express your point without being salty and awarding everyone with a clown, I mean is this your normal way to behave around comments? Maybe stop trolling / trying to ragebait people you don't agree with. Since that childish behaviour won't work, you may also try to grow up man, it's never too late

lol i didn't give you any awards. Speaking of salty, I mean, have you seen a mirror? You've done nothing but further derail this post, so good job :)

Because derailing this post is probably what you wanted to do since the beginning, for a reason that I can't understand.

I apologize for offending the NVIDIA 572.16 drivers. They seem so important and divine to you that you felt the need to continuously defend them, even at the cost of your own dignity. You even resorted to spamming clown awards, despite the fact that doing so gives me and others free Steam points. It doesn't matter that a large number of people are experiencing issues with these drivers; what seems to matter most is the belief that they hold some divine quality beyond my understanding. Perhaps my IQ is too low to grasp it.

That being said, oh keeper of boundless wisdom, I wish you a day filled with joy and delight. May those drivers give you the happiness that you deserve.

Are you also a denier? After a few minutes of answering me, you gave me the clown award out of nowhere, strangely to my comment that didn't agree with yours xD do you think there are other salty haters active in the chat besides you? Wake up! You can't even admit simple things, it doesn't surprise me that you want to be right at all costs, but it's not very mature of you to behave this way

And about derailing the post, that's what you've been trying to do from the beginning! xD And congratulations for having succeeded. I hope you are happy now. Hooray!

And don't worry, I'm not salty at all, if I had to get angry for every single insignificant person, who only knows to troll around, I would do something else in life by now, I just have the bad habit of answering even to trolls' comments, unfortunately when you try to reason with petty people or trolls, you never get anything of value

You should grow up and stop trolling around. Next time try a little of kindness and to avoid troll behavior, I'm sure they wouldn't hurt you!

I won't add anything else, because I think Melody explained herself more than better
Yeah I’m the salty one. LOL. I gave no one any awards. Wouldn’t waste the points.

The white knighting is funny though, maybe you deserve it!
