Huge O.G fan, is this more like before or after Crack in Time?
Topic, Crack in Time was the last game that I enjoyed that loosely felt like the O.G trilogy, and I even really liked Gladiator as a spin-off

But the games after that, the games felt like they missed the linear-but-free exploration and gunplay, and the story and gameplay of the reboot really missed the mark of the dynamic between the duo.

So by the name, is this more like a step back to the older times, or does it continue from the rebooted first game?

Its like the reboot, as a game its competent but the identity of the OG is gone. From the writing, characters, story, music(Barely hear it) worst weapons are all just bland.

Ahh well, will skip this one then, each release gives me more hope for Bloodborne to hit the store though.

Maybe Ratchet & Clank is just the product of its times, and the times have changed massively from way back when.

I hate using the term lack of "soul" but that's what the game feels like. Somehow a weapon that is somewhat similar to the tesla coil from 1 has less personality to something that came out 20 years ago. I'm confused how it got so much praise for something so bland and mid.

Have you tried Ratchet & Clank: Nexus/Into the Nexus? It's very short, but in some ways, it might feel closer to Ratchet & Clank 1/2 than A Crack in Time did.

(It's also a bit funny to me that you'd use "the O.G trilogy" as a comparison. Personally, I might consider Ratchet & Clank 3/Up Your Arsenal as a game to be closer to A Crack in Time than to the first two games - so in that sense, what is "the O.G trilogy" as a game? But most people probably don't think the same, so I get what you mean.)

Writing-/Humour-wise, I'd say that you can (crudely) separate the series into three categories. The PlayStation 2/Portable games, the Future trilogy plus Nexus, and All 4 One/QForce/reboot. Rift Apart fits into the "Future trilogy plus Nexus" category here. (It also doesn't continue from the "reboot" game in a literal sense - the "reboot" game is essentially non-canon to the rest of the series.)

Game-wise, you ask whether it's like "before" or "after" A Crack in Time - I'd say that it's probably "at" A Crack in Time. It's definitely not the same as the PlayStation 2 games, but (as someone who values the story and humour a lot,) comparing it to All 4 One, QForce/Full Frontal Assault, or the "reboot" game is unfair to Rift Apart.

If you want a third-person shooter that's more lighthearted than most "serious" big games these days, then you could always just wishlist Rift Apart and wait for a 50% sale someday, play it for a little under two hours, and maybe refund it if it's not your thing.
If you specifically want a PlayStation 2-era Ratchet & Clank game, then this isn't it - but is any other "big" game going to be like that, either?

Not many devs are doing mascot games anymore besides Sega and Nintendo. The problem is that like this game the series had an identity with the original trilogy. With later releases they felt bland no real characterization. "Where are the lombaxes" is a plot point that peaked with clank n time and it's a point no one asked. What we are left with is a gender swap of ratchet and clank with none of the character development or I should say Ratchet and clank basically telling them what they should do.

Not sure what is meant about the gameplay differences. I've played them all and they all feel like Ratchet and Clank games naturally evolving over time. This one does miss on the story and weapons though. I find myself not at all interested in the story and 2/3 into the game I'm still waiting for a fun to use weapon. Ratchet and Clank 2016 was far more fun for me.

its really its own type of game. they added this new ability called the phantom dash which allows you to warp out of the way of enemy attacks. it makes it play more like burnout with guns then ratchet and clank but its fun. there was this really cool line at the spa that when I went back to that area of the game on my next playthrough it wasnt there anymore it was this battery acid is flat. maybe I didnt activate it or I wasnt playing the spa section long enough but it really sucks that its not there anymore. theyre going after our local music scene now our spas by a wealthy white robot was kind of funny. but its still lame in comparison to that other line. the game has charm but isnt funny and the game is deeply engrossing and takes its setting seriously. the problem is the game really has no sense of humor. rivet is entertaining but she lives in the most serious place on earth so you really don't get to hear her joke. neither do you get to laugh with ratchet. the only jokes are from how stupid the nefarious are. everything else is just delightful and quirky. sure itll put a smile on your face but nothing in the game is really funny.

The dash is just a dodge with iframes which for certain encounters is more or less needed. Only time the game ever got a chuckle was the pirate park taking Ratchets name as "what" everything else is the game's attempt at humor.
