To me, the best one in terms of content, gameplay, weapons and pacing would be 'A Crack in Time' for the newer gen, and 'Up Your Arsenal' for the first gen. Third is always the charm.
The Future series has fantastic world design, balancing and story telling overall. The old ones seem to win in content.
R&C 1 (2002) > Ratchet: Deadlocked > R&C 2: Going Commando > R&C 3: Up Your Arsenal > R&C Future: A Crack in Time > R&C: SIze Matters > R&C Future: Into the Nexus > R&C Future: Tools of Destruction > R&C: Full Frontal Assault > Secret Agent Clank > R&C: All4One > POWER GAP > R&C (2016)
Haven't played Rift Apart yet. R&C 3: Up Your Arsenal and R&C Future: A Crack in Time are very close, but UYA has David Bergeaud composing the OST so it wins.
GC>OG>2016>UYA>CiT>Nexus>ToD>QfB
GC wins out over the OG as while the narrative was weaker the overall gameplay kept the fun and variety while fixing the originals awkward controls.
I know 2016 being so high up the list will be controversial but besides the poor story and the missing content the core gameplay felt like such a huge refinement of the series. The controls in particular felt so solid in a way the series hadn't felt up to that point (thank goodness the stupid crouch jump button combos were finally gone). The graphics were also drop dead gorgeous and I *loved* the jetpack. It was also the first game in a while to do proper Clank missions. I really miss the early games use of Clank and his minions. It also had some GC style spacefighter missions that I had really liked.
UYA felt like a weaker rushed GC so it's lower on the list and the PS3 ones lost the edge and tone of the PS2 games. CiT had some cool ideas like the space ship but the loss of classic Clank missions stung. ToD might have been higher than Nexus but it had severe balancing issues at the end game. So many fully upgraded weapons just became useless which made the final boss a real pain until I looked up how to get the RYNO which turned it into an 'I win' fight which also wasn't great.
I started playing Deadlocked recently but had to put in on pause due to RL matters. Tbh I think it would be low on the list. I kind of get the appeal (the edge is there) but the lack of platforming hurts the game imo. It's not as fun as a core title and the stop start nature of the game with the quick matches is annoying (I understand why it's done, i'm just not the biggest fan so far).
Otherwise I have Size Matters on my Vita that I may play one day. I did try a Secret Agent Clank demo once but the QTE sequence was a progress stopper and utterly ruined the game. I hope if they did a remaster they'd remove the sequences or at the very least require multiple failures to force a restart. I'd also like to try Full Frontal Assault but I heard the performance was *really* bad which is why it didn't review well. Port please?
It had split screen co-op, and I loved playing it with my brother. I had played the other PS2 R&C games as well and greatly enjoyed them, but have the most fond memories of Deadlocked because of that co-op. Also, never had a PS3, so I was never able to play the series there.
Hell yeah, i played sooooo much deadlocked/gladiator with my friends,. We loved it.
Objectively, these are the most accomplished episodes.
The rest is pure nostalgia, with the fake Ratchet games removed -> Deadlocked, All 4 One, QForce.
