What was the point of pre-download
Decided to try this game on my break, tried to launch it on rog ally but it seems to have to "unpack", which is taking just as long. So why put an option to pre-download if you still have to wait...

Because those of us we fast storage on desktop PCs, but less than great Internet, the unpack only took 8 seconds, after yesterdays 12 hour pre-load download.

I know right. Also, mine actually worked, but the performance dragged so bad. So I ended up uninstalling the game and reinstalling it. That actually helped and cleaned up my game.

ever heard of ssd ?

It's an option for those with slow internet speeds, so they can play sooner at release. If you have a good SSD and slow internet, preload is a good option. For those of us with a few gigs of download speed, preload is not really necessary. I downloaded the game in less than 10 minutes.

My friend spent 4h downloading the game yesterday and less than 2 min to unpack game files.

As others said, it depends of how fast is your storage, if you own an ssd it's a great thing.

If you have an old HDD and very fast internet then preload might not be the best option.

Don't preload a game if you're still using HDDs.

Unpacking (decrypting) a preloaded game is actually limited by your CPU speed.

Unpacking took only 3 minutes on my 5800X3D + Samsung 980 PRO, and maybe another 2 minutes to verify.

its to prevent people from manually starting the game or getting into the files before it officially releases. Also its taking so long for you because because in your case your limited by cpu (or maybe you have it loaded on a sd card). However most people are heavily limited by internet, So typically its still much faster and it still is for you because you would also still need to unpack it even if you didn't preload.

If you download after release, the unpacking process is waaay quicker as I believe it's not encrypted. If you have fast internet, it can be faster to not pre-load.
