I'm willing to bet it went like this:
You dealt 4+4= 8 damage
Your opponent dealt 1 damage.
Your opponent was andromalius for +2 damage, and/or had the Goblet of the Traitor for +3 damage.
Your opponent bribed the judge more than you, and had 6 charisma. +6 damage.
1 (level) + 2 (Andromalius) + 6 (Charisma) = 9 damage.
9 damage beats 8, so andromalius wins.
Its straight forward math. If math isn't your fun place you're not going to have fun in a number of board games. Some don't rely on it as much, but this one does, at least when it comes to duels.
The tension in this game's case often comes down to 'how much should I bribe the ref in order to guarantee my charisma bonus'. It's a bit of a poker thing if you've ever watched that online- and you can get thrown off from learning the game against bots, as I'm pretty sure they never bribe, so its easy to miss there's another level to it.
You're very cute.
It's a BS mechanic not cause of the way it's calculated, but cause of the way it can be used and, most importantly, abused
Genuinely curious about what you mean by abused; the game seems to have a ton of things that are bit dickish/abuse worthy, like declaring on people with no way to respond, or spamming down a legion with rituals, or masking a ritual into pandora.
What do you mean by abuse? Like, a bug, or just general ♥♥♥♥-ishness?
Personally, I experience (and dish out) relatively little hardship from them. I'd sooner say that with Rituals as a fundamental mechanic it sucks that immense resistance against them can be set up fairly easily.
Why do you feel Duels matter that much?
One can dream, eh?
Also, the most brutal actual exploitable bug I'm currently aware of is that Events can be activated twice. I reported this recently through multiple channels.
I haven't tested to see if it's always possible, or when or how it's additive or not, but I did it with Sinful Windfall and received its benefits twice, and saw I could set it up with Capricious Wrath but didn't want its benefits in a multiplayer match again.
