So what is an "Ascension Level"?

I mean, I can guess. But where can I see which level am I at, and/or how do I increase it?

Never mind. It turns out that "Ascension level" means "The level of upgrade you enabled through the Ascension tree". As it happens.

Those words make sense separately, but in the context of the game, I still can't figure it out.
The highest level attained? The level of the lowest branch? What do you mean by "level"?´
Is there a better or worse way to use elixir?
