Riddle answer - week 7
Candle

Edit: apparently I've managed to miss entering a riddle answer somewhere along the line, so we are on week 7

Also, in case anyone looks at their riddle count and gets confused (like me) apparently everyone who created riddle answer threads just followed the counting from the first person to do so, who started at 'week 2' rather than 'week 1'. So this is technically actually week 6.
I started the riddle answer posts and I have 6 completed riddles so far, making this week 7, nobody posted for week 1 of riddles. So the first post was Week 2.

A new candle is tall - as it burns, the wax melts, and it gets shorter

When a candle is new it is it's full length, tall, but when you light it and it begins to melt it becomes old, short.

Suffice to say this is one of those classic riddles that probably pre-date any of the alternative candles you're referring to, and the language of riddles is often metaphorical.

So have you completed 6 riddles or 7 riddles including this week? (sorry, my brain infamously doesn't like to wrap itself around most things involving time lol)
i though that was pencil

Good call, would also fit. Again, I think pencils are more modern than this particular riddle.

My first thought was pencil, then shadow. If the shadow is young/new, the sun is deep, so the shadow would be tall.

Language of the riddle doesn't make sense, even when using metaphors.
If I wasn't broke I'd pay to see a conversation between you and the Sphinx (if it existed).

The only problem I see with the shadow answer is that the sun is at its highest and the shadow its shortest at noon, after which the shadow starts getting longer/taller again.
