I really don't understand it at all.... except to sell over priced GPU's!

Then why do better looking games use less VRAM?
Torv Apr 4, 2023 @ 2:36pm
To keep things simple, more VRAM used in a game = less FPS. In this game, there's a VRAM meter at the top in the Graphics menu. Might default between 10K - 12.5K. Your goal is to go through each setting and see which ones make the VRAM meter go down. Get the VRAM meter down as low as possible by lowering settings you're okay with lowering.

Settings that don't effect VRAM (when you change it, the bar at the top doesn't move) will still have an impact but much less. For me, just by reducing the settings that have big VRAM differences bumped me up 20 - 30 FPS.

The VRAM usage of this game is just unacceptable, check digital foundry video. There are open world games with better graphic that works just fine with 8gb of vram, no talking about resident evil 4 that has a comparable graphic quality and works FLAWLESSLY, even on steamdeck.
This is just another crappy job by Iron Galaxy. How's such a terrible studio can get such big contracts is beyond me. I mean even Arkham Knight was a big AAA game and they screwed up SO BADLY. I can understand that probably they are cheap but big companies like Sony shouldn't give their biggest IPs in the hands of such amateurs (with already a terrible fame) Arkham Knight was pulled out from the stores that bad it was, and this game should be removed for a couple of months as well.

Bingo.

This game's Low textures recommend 6 gigs of VRAM, which is absolutely hilarious when you see what they look like. Even Medium textures are a console generation or two behind, while demanding twice the resources.

The game's trying to treat your PC like a PS5, and the only reason it works for some people is because they have the much higher-end hardware to brute force through that treatment.

VRAM requirements should go up if increased fidelity demands it. But not like this game. Not even close.

the vram meter isnt going high or down whatever you do atm

you can put everything on low and the game will need the same amount of VRAM still....

Vram usage is very largely dependent on the resolution you use. I run my game at 1920x1080 and my vram usage does not go above 7gb on my 2070 Super. in MSI afterburner. Having said that I have played the game and just got to his mates town and am starting to suffer ctd's. They are the first and I have had three so far. Maybe its something to do with the saves bloating memory usage or something somewhere, or it was the patch ?

The maximum amount of ram used was just under 16gb out of 32gb.

if i can run Metro Exodus on 2k and anything else fine with just small adjustments in the graphics and it drops vram usage mostly very good visible....

how the heck is this game ported that it eats a 8 GB card even when you turn almost everything off etc...

its a terrible port sad to say it because Last of US is AMAZINg...

There are a handful of graphic settings that reduce the VRAM meter in this game, but I'm sure different graphics cards have different allotments. I remember the big ones to be Character and Environment Textures. If you go from Ultra to Low on those, you don't see a reduction in VRAM consumption on the meter?

Holy cr*p, not sure what you are all talking about, but bad Graphics? NOPE, Low Frame rates? Nope.. and I'm not having a monster pc here. I'm having a 5600X with an Nvidia 3060TI and 16GB ram running this on a 2TB M.2, and everything is practically on ultra. I just used the optimisation from Nvidia and that's it, nothing more, nothing less, and I'm running this whole game nicely between 80 to 100fps.

And talking about a bad port? and behind consoles of 2 gens? did you even play this on a PS3 or PS4? according to the statements here, clearly not...

why it works ok on a 4090 and a 13900k. dont be poor - these devs, probably

i dont see a reduction of consumption in everything ^^

(3070 here)

maybe the visuals are bugged but so far going on the lowest changes nothing and otherway around lol

Iron Galaxy had very little to do with this port actually, so the blame for the bad optimisation falls on ND

One thing for sure now, expect to see tons of vram on low end rubbish again and watch it fly off the shelves. 16gb 7400xt? Watch Radeon VII's making a big comeback on the used market too cos 16gb vram, it'll last for years to come.
With the hotfix driver and a 3070, I use 9.5/8 GB VRAM and the game runs almost perfectly fine on 4K with high textures. Crashes totally gone. Getting 40+ fps outdoors, 60fps indoors with DLSS on performance. (R9 5900X, 32GB,NVME PCIE4 SSD)
