Game doesn't even launch
When I try to start the game, the windows command prompt opens for a few seconds, closes itself and after that the tlou.exe also quits itself. No error message or crash report or anything, I tried compatibility modes, drivers, made sure the game files are good, redownloaded everything but it won't even start.

My rig: i5 13500, RTX 3060ti, 32GB Ram, installed on a nice NVMe drive, so the requirements are met

You shouldn't get a Windows command prompt. You should see a prompt from Steam that the game is starting. Check your Windows error logs: application and system. Those should tell you what's happening.

I have the same situation and have already filed a support ticket with Naughty Dog. I checked the Windows Error Log and got this:

Have you installed/reinstalled MSVCR (aka vcredist) 2019 x86/x64 yet ?
Updated Windows OS also ?
Marcus Iago Apr 2, 2023 @ 11:35pm
Yes. My Windows installation is up to date and I have installed the latest Visual C++ Redistributable.

I see the Steam thing that the game is starting then the cmd.exe then everything closes again, yes vcredist is the newest update, everything else is also up to date.

Exact same issue, people keep trying to convince my its my PC fault lol
Marcus Iago Apr 3, 2023 @ 7:13am
If it helps in troubleshooting the errors people are getting, my hardware meets and exceeds the minimum requirements and I’m working on a freshly installed and updated version of Windows:

AMD 5900x
32GB RAM
Nvidia 4070ti
2TB SSD

If anyone with the same issue could file a report ticket to Naughty Dog, it might helpful at this point.

Sounds like a privilege or access information issue.

Windows is fully up to date?

Is Steam installed in Program Files x86?

Everything is up to date and Steam is installed in the correct location. All of my other Steam games work properly and this is the only game from Steam to have failed to load.

There's no such thing as "steam being installed in the correct directory". I also didn't ask if Steam was installed in the correct directory. I asked if it was installed in Program Files x86.

In my case it is no, and to exclude privilege issues I did run the game as admin and still that same 1000 Event log

Firstly, I didn’t ask for your help, my purposes for posting this is to raise awareness so Naughty Dog takes notice and people file a support ticket so watch your tone. Secondly, there isn’t a correct location for steam but there is a default install location and it is in Program Files (x86), which is where mine is installed.

Go help yourself.

Okay, if the Program Files x86 directory isn't involved and you're on the latest Windows Update, the troubleshooting steps for this error (look it up with "Cx0000005 on Windows") is to roll back Windows update, restore an older restore point on Windows, or install Windows again keeping personal data. There's a few other things to try, but that's if it's pertaining to other issues relating to memory management and other areas.

Data Execution Protection or DEP being disabled sometimes fixes this.
Being infected with Malware can also cause this problem.
And defective RAM though less likely, but doesn't hurt to investigate either. Run memory diagnostics and try booting your system and replicating the error with only a single stick of RAM and swapping that single stick out until you find out which RAM stick is impacted (if impacted at all).

Can also try reinstalling the game itself too.
