is there no button for taking melee weapon off your back?

the only way Ive been able to equip melee weapons off by back is by pushing f and swinging it, is there a button Im not seeing for just equipping it without swinging?

Yes, there is, but which control does it depends on your input device (keyboard, controller, etc.) Check the controls map and play around with it.

I don't think there's a button for that. You have to break it and just not pick any up again.

Yeah there isn't I don't think :( I wish there was, I really don't like how I can't have my melee pulled out before I attack, it just looks so weird how Joel is able to pull out his axe/machete/pipe/woodplank in less than a second, it also looks stupid him swinging it at nothing is the only way to have it pulled out lol, guess I'll just have to keep doing that, at least it doesn't look as stupid as Joel being the flash and able to remove his axe from it's holster in 0.25 seconds

there is no button to unequip the melee tool, you just have to break it.

No. It's automatically equipped and used, by pressing the melee button. There is no need to "only equip" it because you will not have any advantages of it.
