When Joel is carrying the girl, sprinting doesn't increase his speed very much, but it should increase his speed enough for him to reach safety. However, in this particular sequence the "sprint" button on the keyboard (left-shift) did not initially seem to work at all, so Joel kept getting killed no matter what I did. I'm not sure what I did to fix it, but I fooled around with the "Customize Controls" menu and somehow I got sprint to work even when the keys were back to the default setting. Joel still ran slowly, but just fast enough to get to safety.
(I don't know if the new hotfix fixes this because I don't know how to find and install the hotfixes)
P.S. - I've now switched to a controller (XBox wired controller in my case), and sprinting still seems buggy.
