HOW TO FIX CRASHES (for real)!!!
So I had tried everything, updated to the latest 1.0.1.6 patch, replaced this, tweaked that, but the game was still crashing every couple minutes... Until I discovered it is actually a known issue with the latest NVIDIA drivers!

"Open Issues: [The Last of Us Part 1] Game may randomly crash during gameplay on GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs [4031676]"

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/514764/geforce-grd-53141-feedback-thread-released-32323/

That's right, NVIDIA is largely responsible for The Last of Us terrible launch. NVIDIA is largely responsible for Naughty Dog getting bad rep and losing sales. NVIDIA should apologize publicly for this so people realize, because their "game ready" driver specifically breaks the game it is supposed to support, and the game company is losing massive profits due to NVIDIA's screw up! That is serious business and I would be upset if I were Naughty Dog.

Here's how to fix the crashes if you have an NVIDIA RTX 30 series card.

First, if you are using a driver version 531.18 or newer, UNINSTALL IT. You can reboot in safe mode and use Display Driver Uninstaller to remove it completely.

Next back in regular mode windows, download this specific driver version: 528.49.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Install the driver. I usually skip installing the HD audio and GeForce Experience.

Reboot, and enjoy a functional game!

Playing the original on PS3 fixed it for me. No crashes, no long load times, smooth performance.

Old news and also it doesn't really help with game bugs causing crashes.
Worked for me. At first it would crash every 5-10 minutes for me. Totally unplayable. With the second hotfix and the hotfix driver I didn't have any crashes anymore (played 2-3 hours since then). So it definitely did something, but maybe not for everyone.

Not for everyone - that's for sure.

For me with Nvidia driver fix 531.58 I'm still crashing every 2 minutes

I would disable Windows Driver Updates and then DDU from safe mode reinstall latest drivers / hotfix and reinstall chipset drivers while at it, Windows has been very annoying for AMD users on radeon to a point Windows decided to update drivers while you play games, and then cause random blackscreen crash, altho i doubt that is your case, Windows still corrupts drivers quite easily.
You can use gpedit.msc method preferably on Windows 11 pro or windows 10 or inside DDU options you can find option to disable Windows Driver Updates highly recommended as most users will update their own drivers.

FOR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT:

If you have GSync or Freesync, disable the game's native vsync and use that.

Also, use the game's in-game FPS cap to max your FPS at 60.

With FPS set to 60 fps cap the game runs buttery smooth. In a game like this you don't need super high FPS like in competitive FPS shooters, and all it will do is cost you more on your power bill (and heat up your gear).

LOL clown post.

I play (for this kind of game) with gamepad, maybe is why play over 60FPS is not important at all...

Because 60 fps looks like ♥♥♥♥. Playing on a gamepad has nothing to do with it.

My game crashes unless I lock the fps to 30, I have an rx 6900 xt so not just an nvidia issue

I'm actually seeing a similar thing on Ubuntu -- GTX1650. I was running 525 driver, game ran*. Just upgraded to a 545 driver (because I installed Cuda 12.3, and it requires newer than 525 drivers), got a nice boost in CP2077, no other issues, but TLOUi now crashes at the spinning dog tag. (These are just the versions Ubuntu installs with nvidia-driver-525 and nvidia-driver-545; looking through my log I specifically went from 525.147.05 to 545.23.08.)

*Well, the game "ran" but not too well. 25FPS in general, which I could deal with, but then the FPS drops right off in a gunfight or whatever. It claims to be using 6GB of it's available 12GB VRAM (it's a 4GB card so I don't know where it gets the VRAM numbers from; I could certainly see FPS being a problem if it's thrashing like 2GB of textures and such between system RAM and VRAM though.)

Just play in Windows.

Only specific scenes? Maybe can be a disk issue, when load takes longer than the maximum request time. Try test while monitoring the hardware activity on Afterburner, Task manager or on Resource Monitor.

This game was launch a time ago, I've completed months ago with the latest driver released.

Dude, you don't even own the game. I think you just admitted to piracy.

Steam is not the only one to sell this game... Games from Epic are not show here

Oh, I wasn't even aware they also sell it on Epic. Sorry, my bad then.
