HOW TO FIX CRASHES (for real)!!!
So I had tried everything, updated to the latest 1.0.1.6 patch, replaced this, tweaked that, but the game was still crashing every couple minutes... Until I discovered it is actually a known issue with the latest NVIDIA drivers!

"Open Issues: [The Last of Us Part 1] Game may randomly crash during gameplay on GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs [4031676]"

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/514764/geforce-grd-53141-feedback-thread-released-32323/

That's right, NVIDIA is largely responsible for The Last of Us terrible launch. NVIDIA is largely responsible for Naughty Dog getting bad rep and losing sales. NVIDIA should apologize publicly for this so people realize, because their "game ready" driver specifically breaks the game it is supposed to support, and the game company is losing massive profits due to NVIDIA's screw up! That is serious business and I would be upset if I were Naughty Dog.

Here's how to fix the crashes if you have an NVIDIA RTX 30 series card.

First, if you are using a driver version 531.18 or newer, UNINSTALL IT. You can reboot in safe mode and use Display Driver Uninstaller to remove it completely.

Next back in regular mode windows, download this specific driver version: 528.49.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Install the driver. I usually skip installing the HD audio and GeForce Experience.

Reboot, and enjoy a functional game!

FOR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT:

If you have GSync or Freesync, disable the game's native vsync and use that.

Also, use the game's in-game FPS cap to max your FPS at 60.

With FPS set to 60 fps cap the game runs buttery smooth. In a game like this you don't need super high FPS like in competitive FPS shooters, and all it will do is cost you more on your power bill (and heat up your gear).

I am using the newest nvidia drivers (531.41) and have not had a single crash so....

@Grimzy you are one of the lucky ones then. If you look on NVIDIA's own page for the 531 series drivers they themselves have listed crashes in Last Of Us and other games as a known issue.

Downgrading from 531.41 to 528.49 I went from not being able to play 5 minutes without a crash, to playing over 2 hour straight buttery smooth (with FPS cap in-game set to 60fps and game Vsync disabled on a Gsync monitor) without a single glitch, crash, or hiccup.

YMMV. But it IS a listed known issue from NVIDIA.

EDIT: Do you have a 40xx series card? Apparently the constant crashes due to driver bug is only affecting the 30xx series cards, so that might be why you don't have them.

Same. If there is a driver issue it would have to be specific to certain cards. My RTX 2070 has no issues, My daughters's RTX 3060 has no issues either

This isn't true, while there are issues with the latest Nvidia driver it only affects 30 series cards. The game is a mess optimization wise and that is purely down to ND

I'm not even use a GRD driver and still get frequent crashes. The game is a mess

Can't blame NVIDIA entirely, since this game is sponsored by AMD, game developer definitely lacks cooperation with NVIDIA, and did not test the stability on NVIDIA gpu.

And this issue mainly affects 3000 series GPUs, there are many other issues that need game patches to fix.

I just sadly had one, on a 3080 ti/5800X/32GB of Really Good 3600 DDR4 RAM on a Samsung 980 Pro. I'd like to think the driver issue has merit, but I haven't tried downgrading [literally just upgraded this morning lol].

Also remember, you have to sit through shader compilation again if you change the driver.

I would wait for updates personally

To clarify, Nvidia seems to think it affects 30 series cards and TLOU only, but it affects more than just TLOU and possibly more than 30 series. A 1070ti and 4090 user reported the same crash event log in the Nvidia thread

Same here but with a 4 series card

I saw the 1070 Ti one, but it was paired with an i3 and crashed during shader compilation, so I just ignored it as an outlier

Yes, you will have to wait for shaders to compile if you change drivers. I suggest letting this finish before loading a save.

However, this is a known issue with NVIDIA drivers on the 30xx series cards, acknowledged by NVIDIA themselves in the "known issue" section of their driver page.

This is not something a game patch can or will fix. This is an NVIDIA bug, caused by NVIDIA drivers. The only way to fix the crashes it causes on 30xx series cards is to downgrade the drivers to 528.49 (game runs buttery smooth) or wait for NVIDIA to come out with a fix and new drivers.

Waiting for a game patch will NOT fix this. Ever. Just FYI.

Unbelievable a massive billions of dollars company like NVIDIA can charge scalper price for video cards, nearly doubling the price vs. past generation cards when they cost basically the same to make, yet they can't ensure their drivers don't totally destroy the reputation of decent game companies trying to release awesome games by causing total instability and crashing in an otherwise working product.

SHAME on you NVIDIA. SHAME. ON. YOU.

EDIT: This is a known issue on NVIDIA's own driver page. It is said to only affect 30xx series cards so if you are on a 40xx it is possible you have not experienced constant crashes due to this. But it IS a confirmed NVIDIA driver problem for the 30xx series cards, BY NVIDIA THEMSELVES.

my game has worked from the begining quite well, before drivers ( i initially forgot to install them) and after, as well as with the two patches. and all that with a 3080 10gb vram. sooooooo
WeirdScienceX Mar 31, 2023 @ 10:55am
I meant, wait for updates to the driver and game. Only both will increase performance and stop the crashing

Pretend 60 FPS is ok all you want, but don't tell me how to live my life.
