nvlddmkm Event ID 0 crash is a driver issue. 4/4: HOTFIX AVAILABLE
Update: NVIDIA seems aware of the issue, since they added these to Open Issues:
Event Viewer logs nvlddmkm error at the end of the OCCT video ram test when memory is full [4049182]
[The Last of Us Part 1] Game may randomly crash during gameplay on GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs [4031676]

Update 2: A couple users on Nvidia Game-Ready thread confirmed they are getting the issue with 1070ti and 4090 as well, so it might affect more than just 30 series. Definitely report your experience on the feedback form or to Nvidia support if you're getting these nvlddmkm crashes.

Update 3: Hotfix driver is available today 4/4 https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5455

Original Post:
Hi all,

I found this thread and linked thread on Nvidia forums about how recent nvidia drivers are having issues, seemingly when using a lot of VRAM.
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/515515/nvlddmkm-error-rtx-3080/

So if you are constantly crashing and Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events has an nvlddmkm Event just before the TLOU Application Error like this, you should report the problem to Nvidia support.
The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 2d00

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table
Example picture of the event in Event Viewer: https://i.imgur.com/1iHPUur.png

I have EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB, please post your GPU if you get this error.

Thanks

Also, game version 1.0.1.6 was just released.

Got the 30 card. Got the crashes. Got that event message. Check, check and check. And yeah, submitted my contribution to that Nvidia thread

Cool thanks for reporting it!

If anyone wants to try reproducing the error outside of game you can run OCCT VRAM test at 95% for a second or two and stop it and check Event Viewer for that nvlddmkm event. I just got it to appear by running the test a few times quickly.

Yeah I bought the same card used recently. Been very happy with it but this is making me second guess if I should have went with a 3090 with it's 24gb of vram for a couple hundred more. All the benchmarks were showing only like a 10 fps difference between the cards but I guess that wasn't telling the whole story.

Ha I've been feeling sad about my 10gb too but even TLOU Pt1 runs great maxed out on 1440p DLSS Quality. Other than the driver crash bug of course

Can I rollback the driver? Would that fix it? Or is it something that just has to wait for NVIDIA to fix?

The original thread I posted linked to another thread here

They went as far back as 512.95 drivers to fix the issue since the problem has been around for months. I'm not sure if any newer drivers work.
Edit: Also I think it's best to wait for a fix so you don't lose improvements from recent drivers. Hopefully they are working on a hotfix fast!

The problem is, if you use a driver that doesn't support TLOU1 yet, you will have even worse performance than with the current driver, but the game might be stable.

This is interesting. It appears that this could also explain some crashes with this game too, being a game that uses VRAM so much. I will try 512.95 and report back.

Ok, thank you very much for this information I guess I can wait, I hope it will be soon also :)

Report?
FluroCrayons Mar 30, 2023 @ 11:37pm
I'm using 528.49 and have a 3080.
Once I heard there were issues I didn't bother updating drivers, game has run fine (admittedly with FPS limited to 60 and DLSS quality) so far (8hrs) for me *fingers crossed*.
Most I've seen my GPU usage get to though was about 50% despite the VRAM being used about 80% according to the settings in game so... that also could be why I'm not having issues.

I'm using 531.41 and have an 3080Ti. Got the same error message. However, yesterday it worked flawlessly after I played with settings that used 10gb vram. Today it's crashing again. How do I report this to nvidia? There are like 5 people in that thread.

edit: got it.

Got a response from NVIDIA under my report: "Fix for this will be in our next driver update"
Bad news: nothing about when that will happen
Good news: gone from "Open issue" to "Fix will be released" which is another word for "we've committed to a fix and are prioritizing it".
