Random crashing - possible fix AMD Radeon 7900 GRE
Finally found the cause of my random crashing. It was the AMD Adrenaline software. As soon as I uninstalled it and let windows install the default GPU drivers everything run spot on. Been playing for over 1 1/2 hours now with no issues where as normally it would crash every 15 - 20 mins. Obviously not a great long term solution but going to do a bit more testing then contact AMD customer services with my findings.

Here was that reply again but without the link I had in there. Maybe thats why steam blocked it. Which was from AMD explaining how to install the driver only. Which seems you did that anyway. So I guess let us know if you have anymore issues.

What AMD display driver are you currently on that works with the last of us? Just to confirm, this driver that windows uses does not install adrenaline software?

Previous drivers for the 7K series card report these issues:

High idle power has situationally been observed when using select high-resolution and high refresh rate displays on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.

Video stuttering or performance drop may be observed during gameplay plus video playback with some extended display configurations on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.

As per AMD Adrenalin 24.5.1:

The release extends HYPR-Tune support for The Last of Us Part I.

The conflict may be with HYPER-Tune? So any driver before 24.5.1 may run fine? But once you try this driver or any driver after it causes issues.

You can also choose to install the driver only when you update manually. Which your default windows driver might be doing. So it doesnt install other Radeon software. This way you can at least use the most up to date driver without Radeon software.

Lastly, what edition GRE do you have? China only or WW?

Since this 7900 GRE has not seen that much availability due to it originally being released in China and not really a popular choice with its second release. Yes, it maybe an issue with this game, on this GPU, with whatever version adrenaline driver.

What I would suggest is making a thread over on AMD forums or reach out to their support team. Since this is an AMD sponsored game. Im sure they would like to know the issues you are having. This way they can look into it and confirm if it is indeed a driver issue or not.

Game runs fine on RDNA3 on latest drivers. You don't need to use antiqued Windows Update drivers.

Sounds like a driver issue on your side. Did you use most up to date driver? The one on windows server may just be old and sometimes older drivers work better, but its AMD and their drivers are bad in general.

What you can try is first download driver 24.12.1 from AMD. Than run AMD cleanup utility to uninstall previous driver. Than install new driver.

Here is link to AMD Cleanup Utility:
https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-601.html

OR, run DDU to completely remove display driver. Running DDU will remove previous driver/s completely and ensure a clean install. Like its being done for the first time on a newly installed OS. Just note that all AMD control panel (app)/monitor settings will be reset and whenever you update the display driver the shaders will recompile for this game and others.

Here is link for DDU. Make sure to read/follow guide if unfamiliar. Its in the link. https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5131

I've already tried DDU then a fresh driver install off the AMD site. It's the Adrenaline software causing the issue, I'm 99% certain of it. All other games work with no issue with Adrenaline installed. I will try it again but it's a really strange issue only affecting the one game. GPU usage goes up to 100% like it's locked into some sort of cycle then adrenaline reports a GPU crash a few seconds later. I hate software glitches. 😂

Hey guys I'm having the same issue, it's 100%GPU related as I can see CPU usage going down on good ol perf monitor on windows while GPU usage spikes wildly. Gonna try the AMD Adrenaline removal thing and report back.

I've read on other forums that SMA can cause issues. Might be an idea to try disabling that in adrenaline first.

Update, just played for 1.5 hours without any crashing. Running 1440p and ultra settings.

I've uninstalled Adrenaline and re-installed the drivers but it's still crashing. This is after 10 hours of crash free playing. It started in the basement of the hotel, the flooded area where you fall down from the elevator shaft. Now I'm in the kitchens and it's still crashing. Please help. I've already done the AMD thingy where it flushes the drivers. Also tried flushing the RAM.

Note: running on 7800xt

Animal_PLANET appears to know far more than I can hope to. Hopefully they can help you when they come back online.

It seems I have found a solution, at least a band aid until I finish the game or the next patch.

>>>>>Basically what did it for me is deactivating the FSR from DISPLAY settings and setting ANTI-ALIASING back to DEFAULT. Feel free to try it out yourself.

Unfortunately this should be on reddit where people can find it, not steam.

I find it unacceptable that this kind of issue is out there so many months after launch.
I'll see how it goes from here.
Once I finish the main story I install Adrenaline back on, and see if the crashes persist. For now, I only had everything turn dark but no GPU crash and restarting the game was enough.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

There wont be a next patch as game seems to have ended support. As last patch was 8 months ago which only updated to FSR 3 and AMD has not added support for FSR 3.1 for this game. So it would be up to AMD I guess but I wouldnt hold my breathe,

If you still have issues with your PC. If this band-aid doesnt hold well. Please make a new thread, list the issues you are having, what you tried so far to fix them, and post your full specs along with OS, PSU, and CPU cooler. We will try to help you out.

The game does not have a memory leak. If the game crashes at same point every time for you. Try to lower your graphic settings and see if you can get past it. As this is usually a sign of bad driver or possible heat issue.
