Do the infected still have a conscience?

It's the first time I've played the last of us and I'm still finishing my first run, really great game.
However, the further I go into the story, the more I continue to wonder if the infected people we meet still have a conscience.
I ask this question because I often hear infected people making noises that are similar to moans. What if the fungus just takes over the body? What if infected people become helpless bystanders as their bodies mutate and the fungus forces them to attack other people?
It is truly disturbing to think about this possibility, especially since the infection can last for years.

They ask this question in the game too, it's up to your own interpretation but I'd say anything that grows in your brain and alters it to where there is no more expression of the person you were, you aren't that person anymore anyway, even if they have some sort of conscience.

Personally, I think you as a person die flat out when the infection takes over.

There are a lot of these types of questions that they deliberately raise and deliberately don't answer.

Unless they did in the sequel or the TV show. I wouldn't know.

Anyway I guess so... That we have to be questions without answers on purpose. The last of us is truly a wonderful game, playing it now for the first time I realize how this title is an essential experience for all videogame lovers.

In my experience, Runners have some conscience left. When sneaking on a Runner, you can hear them cry, as if they're in pain. Once I snuck behind a Runner and he whispered, "make it stop."
