I will never understand people that depict this game like the second coming of christ of gaming. Sure the story is good, but other than that it's neither innovative or something that wasn't already out there. It's a third person cover shooter with some VERY LIGHT rpg elements (if we can call a very minimalistic ability tree and a barebone crafting system rpg to begin with).
I think a lot of tlou players were simply teens at the time and most likely their first compelling game they played mixed with some nostalgia feelings. But for someone like me, that has been playing games since the amiga days (yes, im a boomer lol) this was nothing more than a good story driven game and that's it. But hey "de gustibus not disputandum est". So im not judging. I simply, like you, don't understand it.
The story carried the game and the gameplay is basic like you said.
TLOU mostly sold itself on presentation back in the day and that ages fast.
This game was not that good 10 years ago neither.
What is the innovation that it bringed 10 years ago?
im telling you, people look at this game through teenager rose colored glasses that were used to play to cod and fifa for the most part. It's the same as my friend i told in my original reply. He never really played any story driven games before tlou, so when it did for him it was like this masterpiece.
It's a ten year old game, sold them years later at full price with crappy graphics compared to the resources it requires.
All in all I would give the game a 7 out of ten.
Good game, nothing special and far off from the masterpiece that some kids talks about.
Games are all subjective at the end of the day. For me Uncharted and Last of Us games are the best games ever made. Something like The WItcher 3 comes very close though.
I agree with this.
There are so many titles that have a good story and a good story telling, TLOU has only a good story telling because the story is banal and a cut and paste of the usual zombie series.
Is there someone who remember Max Payne?
Being about the same age, a cannot agree more. Funnily enough when I replayed some old games that I had very fond memories of thanks to GOG, I found quite a few of them not nearly as fun or accessable as back in the day when standards of what was "good", "playable", or a functional interface were much lower. Hence most of these titles are simply not as good by modern standards.
In regard to TLOU, yeah it's an OK game, but an extreamly linear and gamy experience. I mean come on, you can only take along 1 extra mag for your standard handgun and have to leave anything more that you find behind. even when like three more bullets would not realy wheigh you down. That makes no sense in a survival situation, where scarcity of recources is the norm. Instead you lug around 8 different weapons. Yes very believable. But hey, that's just my two cents.
